New here and scared

Hi everyone,

I just joined yesterday, so this is all new to me. My biggest problem right now is working up the courage to ask for professional help. I know I need it, I've tried a few times to quit on my own but always failed after a couple days. The reason I'm so afraid to ask for help is I'm a single mom to three children. Their dad has not made contact with them in over a year. So there's my issue. I'm terrified they'll want to take my children from me! My problems have had enough of an impact on my them, I don't want them to be put in foster care because I'm trying to help myself. Not sure if this makes any sense. Are there any other parents here that have any input?

Btw, the type of help I want to get is outpatient and therapy because I have multiple issues, not just alcoholism.

When I went to an AA meeting I was told to listen for "similarities not differences." Its easy for me to say I'm not that bad off, or I am less than so and so. By listening to the similarities I had with these people, I've learned a lot and stayed sober for 9, almost 10 months now. I wish you luck on your journey!

Glad you found this board!!!! My first step was on this board back in june of 2012 . then I got to a room full of other ppl just like me and to this day still go. It is the only way i could get sober b/c I tried sooooooo many times on my own. I would be able to stop , its just that I couldnt stay stopped. Now I just live ea day sober and thank goodness (and God) I didnt drink today. You can do it too. Get to a place where nobody will judge, just reach out a hand and ask for help.

i BELIEVE IN YOU. You can get to the sober side of life. C'mon!

Welcome! I suggest you find an AA meeting and introduce yourself as new. They usually ask is anyone new or in their first week of sobriety? We don't do this to embarrass you just to get to know you. Stand up and just say your name and you want to stop drinking. After the meeting some women should come up to and talk with you. Good Luck you can do it!

Hi and welcome. I understand your fear and I think it is a little unfounded.

As a single mom, you have an obligation to give them the best shot and example of life and lifes experiences.

I have gone to years of couseling and A.A. and have never heard of anyone losing their children because of it.

I was a single mom for 13 yrs and had severe depression and alcoholism. The way I figured it was "If I don't take care of mom,....I can't care for my son." Of course this was a new concept because I had always put others first.

Go and get the help you need....you will be a better mom because of it.

Thank you for all of the new replies! I am getting over the fear of something happening to my kiddos because I ask for help. I'm asking for help to make their life better - who can be mad at me for that?!

I am new myself. Just joined last night and today is my first day of quit.I know this wont be easy, but I have to do this. I tried to quit before only to fail within week. I was a smoker and smokeless tobacco user for 28 years and I joined an online support group and I quit. I have been tobacco free coming up on 2 years now. I thought I would give this a try and see if I can get my life back!!! Lets do this ForwardMarch together we can beat this disease!!!

Way to go on quitting smoking Buddha! We can do this! It's been difficult, but I'm already feeling so much better!
