Alcoholism Support Group
Alcoholism is the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, even when it is negatively affecting your health, work, relationships and life. If you think alcohol is causing you to lose control, it's time to seek help. Our group is a safe place to vent, check in, get back up if you fall, and reach sobriety.

Let's presume or pretend we live in a state or country where marijuana is legal. Do any of you use marijuana for medical or recreational reasons? Does it make it easier, harder or is it neutral to keep sober?
Does age make a difference?
If it was easily available to me, a retired senior citizen, I would try it to help with depression and pain. I took all sorts of drugs with and without alcohol for 3 or 4 years over 35 years ago. I am sure I was never addicted to them, certainly not like I became addicted to alcohol. For the last 3 years I have been "mostly" sober. I've been through rehab. I have a strong support group. I've recommitted myself to be completely alcohol free and have been completely successful for about 2 months.

Can you identify these rom-coms from just a screenshot from the middle of the films? This is a multiple choice quiz so even if you're not entirely sure you can always take a guess and at least have a 25% chance of getting it right anyway, so why not have a go?! https://www.buzzfeed.com/alysaurus688/rom-com-screenshot-trivia-quiz

I don't care who smokes.
PS in judgemental. But how I view anybody's sobriety is my problem.
He sought a doctor to get a prescription for medical marijuana and used it for several months. During this time, he also helped out several cancer patients with their marijuana (putting it in a easier to consume form.)
After a few months the inflammation started to subside and he stopped using the marijuana. If he had stayed on the pain meds would he have been able to stop so easily?
As for me, if I am ever in the situation where I need the pain relief that medicine can provide, I will take it. I know that I am not cheating myself or fooling myself. i finally know how to take care of myself.
Also, I'm still waiting for you to answer my question as to what you consider legitimate pain and also what pain relievers you do find it acceptable for alcoholics to use?
Not trying to antagonize you, I'm actually authentically curious. You say that marijuana is a no-go for addicts to treat pain, so is morphine or percocets acceptable in your eyes?
We can have discussions like adults, I'm quite sure. I have no issue with someone disagreeing with me (god knows I don't claim to be an expert on anything....lol) but just be respectful about it. If I am not, feel free to tell me as I try to be peaceable and respectful to all.
If a doctor recommends a specific treatment, whatever it is, that's the permission to use. I know many alcoholics who exist even after surgery on just aspirin. I'm not saying it's right or wrong. You go to 10 doctors who won't give you opiates, an 11th will. You can find any doctor to write you a MJ prescription here in Ca. I got one claiming "insomnia". It was a joke.
I'm not a doctor and my pain is different from anyone else's pain. I don't have a right to tell someone what is ok and not ok. In my mind sobriety is not abusing substances.
Again, I don't care what people smoke. But people claiming sobriety and having a marijuana card or medicine cabinet full of pills seems a little wrong. But again, if they are taking something under doctor'a orders, great.
As for unfriending you, I don't know recall why I did, but there must have been a reason at the time.
I got frustrated with this site because there were a lot of self-proclaimed non alcoholics working this forum. I'm here to help the sick, and those related to the sick looking for answers. I'm not here to debate what's right or wrong.
Hopefully we all have the same goal. As for the marijuana issue, I don't think it belongs here.
Marijuana use doesn't have a place as far as being defended as an excuse to cross-addict, however, we are living in a day and age where it is being considered as a legitimate treatment for pain and suffering. To me, that is relevant.
Peace....

I'll be 24 years sober Oct 16. AA I heard the term "marijuana maintenance program" to describe someone who smoked dope after stopping drinking, yet still saying they were sober.
I remember a member who had 30 yrs sober talk about taking Lortab because of a car crash. With all my wisdom (I was all of 5 yrs sober), I told him some people might conclude that he wasn't sober. After 2 years passed I had a weightlifting accident that collapsed 3 lumber discs and herniated 2 cervical discs. Only then did I see how wrong I'd been for judging this man.
I found him and was able to make amends, stating I had been WRONG, period. Before, I couldn't see the forest for the trees. Another saying I heard in AA (though certainly not original) was "let your conscience be your guide". Actually, drugs are an outside issue according to the Traditions of AA so I don't have to take issue with drugs.
Good time to remember that we are all on the same team here.

I am a drug addict whose drug of choice was pot and I cannot ever see myself in a situation where I would smoke it ever again or ingest it thru my stomach either....for me I loved getting high and also used other drugs that I am not mentioning here...but pot by far caused me great emotional distress as it always seems to reignite the fuse of my schizophrenia and I got better with meds for that but also because I stopped smoking pot at that same moment in my historical journey thru life as I know it....
my history tells me if I smoke again it will be about one week and I will be dealing it to support my own use and probably smoking my profits plus my customers dope as well....just cannot run that risk of going to jail my friends! I will never again smoke pot if God is good and helps me to beat that addiction daily....
hey Warmest where you taking vacation to? I saw in email of your journal your going someplace without computer and will be mia for a while...hugs
