I joined here because of the past few weeks, related to job stress, I have enjoyed an occasional evening drink with my wife or by myself and increasingly my ability to not get into fights was getting out of hand. Last night was bad and I realized I had gone from wanting a drink in a peaceful way to take the edge off the day to NEEDING A DRINK to do so and THAT is where I stop. Ooops. No more. Going to an A.A. meeting next week but I do not want to get tooooooo far into this one. Whew.

Hi and welcome reisen. I found a warm welcome and a lot of help in the rooms of Alcoholics Anonymous. One of the most important things they helped me with was showing me how to decide for myself whether or not I was an alcoholic. For the first time I truly understood the nature of my condition and what I could choose to do about it.

I'm a happy and sober alcoholic today as that was the beginning of my turning point, so it can be for you.

Welcome! I wish I had the wherewithal to get my butt to an AA meeting much earlier...but each of us are on our own paths. :)

So glad that you're seeing the consequences and going with the inner urgings to seek help before it gets worse. Because it always gets worse. And the lovely folks in AA know that and will welcome you. let us know how it goes.

Hello reisen55,

When I look back on my drinking, I can see that the rapid downward spiral began when I went from wanting a drink in order to make things easier to NEEDING a drink before, during and after I did anything.

You are wise to act now before it gets worse. Just dont do what I did I was always going to stop drinking tomorrow but never today.

Welcome. AA was a great start for me. I found that with a little sobriety, a light came on. Both in terms of what I can do, freedom, connection with god and my family and friends but also with reality. I used to think I drank socialy until I crossed a line. with a little sobriety i realized that I never drank like a "normie." I usually drank to get drunk, to relax, to escape and numb out. I drank because I liked how it felt and when I felt it I immediately wanted another. Didnt mean I drank heavily right away, but I drank more than I expected to most the time and there were definetly very early big red flags....behaviour when I was drunk I'd never do sober.
I never got the DUI's, or had any bad consequences that others noticed or said anything to me about so I *though* i was OK. I wasnt.
I'm so grateful to be sober.

Hi. I am so glad that you are going to give A.A. a chance. Like I tell everyone, go to at least 25 meetings before you decide that A.A. is not for you.

In A.A. you will find a new freedom, support, love and an education about alcoholism.

I am so glad that you are being honest...that is the first step.
