Alcoholism Support Group
Alcoholism is the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, even when it is negatively affecting your health, work, relationships and life. If you think alcohol is causing you to lose control, it's time to seek help. Our group is a safe place to vent, check in, get back up if you fall, and reach sobriety.
Ok, so, what's his name? Where did you meet him? He cute?
So glad that you finally took those hundred something steps! WWWHHOOOHOOO!!!! :)
hOW YOU DOIN GIRL!!!!!!!
I had no intentions of doing it. I really, really didn't. I didn't need no stupid chips and people clapping at me. I mean really, how pathetic is that. I can do better than that. Then I come here and a bunch of assholes are insinuating that people who don't go to AA are dry drunks. Oh...nice frickin attitude. AA'ers with a bunch of chips on their shoulders. I just had to trust more in myself to really get it. Then I got it, in September 2008. Oh I so got it I celebrated on my 31st day of sobriety. Being unemployed, collecting benefits and a nice nestegg in the bank had my committe going head strong and in first gear. By the mid of November I would decide it was time to quit again before Thanksgiving. Well...something must've happened cuz the next promise was not to waste the month of December and to get real serious about getting a job. That means no drinking cuz if they called me for an interview to go to that day or the next, would not be cool. Instead of one or two days to recoup, it was taking 4 days. Well...something must've happened cuz I was finding that I was telling people I couldn't interview cuz I was out of state but would be back in a few days. Then there was the New Year. Going to start that off right. Something must've happened in January....In the meanwhile,,,,I really started to listen and become friends with yas here. I saw the struggles, the battles, the heartbreak of a lot of us drinking yet once again. Over and over and over and over and over. The more I paid attention the more I realised that the people staying sober are active members of AA. I could no longer deny that perhaps my way will never work. But AA had to be on my terms. Had to be within walking distance or I just would not go. I have horrible night vision dontcha know. And this hood I live in is predominately Spanish-speaking, so AA around here probably only speaks Spanish even if it is close. The truth of the matter is that even though I was laid off from work, deep down I know it was cuz I was drinking and they gave me an easy out. I was not living anymore. I hadn't lived in a long time. It was time for a real change.
All of my excuses ran out when Mr. Jim here found AA literally right around the corner from where I live. I walk past 6 houses, one church, cross the street turn left and walk perhaps 20 feet. Well I bet they don't speak English! I took me what Jim? 3 weeks? 4 weeks? 2 months? to figure out they speak English. I went and then something happened and I drank again for a couple of weeks. I was so pissed on the night that I stopped drinking. My boyfriend didn't get me beer that day - to cover the night and the next day - and I didn't want to go to the store. I was PISSED. I almost went to the store but instead I just yelled at God and said, "Okay! I'll do it your way, my way isn't working. Whatever! I'll do it your way!" My last detox was March 6th. My last first 24 hrs was March 7th.
I went to AA at least once a day. Because I was not working I pretty much went 3 times a day. I stood up at every single meeting and disclosed I was under 30 days. I paid $1 at every single meeting. My miracles were coming swiftly. After 3 days of sobriety I was on a job interview. That still blows my mind. Even though I was drinking I was still looking for a job. I applied for this job 6 months prior. At the interview the Supervisor told me the dollar amount. I told her I would lose money at the rate they wanted to pay me. She said she would work on that. Right....It took a week to process the drug and background check and so on. She called me at home and said I was hired and to arrive for orientation. She also mentioned that she got "them" to increase my hourly rate by $2 an hour. Could that amount be just a coincidence that it would cover all of my expenses and no more and no less than that? It literally covers exactly what I NEED. It does not cover my cigarette smoking habit. My boyfriend gives me money for that. It does not cover steaks and lamb and items to bake treats. My boyfriend gives me money for that.
Another interesting thing happened:
I don't worry about things. I just don't worry. I realized one day that I talk about my drinking as something of the past. I've never done that before. Never.
I think about alcohol but I don't think about drinking it. I can't really pin point what I am thinking or feeling when I think about alcohol. I know it's there but I really don't care. My committee is gone. It's really gone. I don't feel compelled.
Is this because of AA? Nope. It's because I'm not doing "this thing" my way anymore. And I don't know how many times I have heard the promises recited day after day after day after day but it just dawned on me a couple of weeks ago that God is doing for me what I could not do for myself. AA is my vehicle to this spiritual path, which is exactly what AA is. A spiritual adventure. I am much more conscious of what a little bitch I can be. Bitchy thoughts. OMG so many people at AA are getting on my nerves but now I am looking at well what is the REAL reason for that...Everytime I take someone's inventory I am now conscious of it. I am conscious of my talking behind people's backs. I am conscious of my impatience. I am conscious I am not such a very good person to say the least. And it's like WOW I gotta lotta work to do! I gotta whole lotta of work to do.
My birthday was in June. I turned 47. My brother and I are the same age for 16 days out of the year. This was the first time in our lives he has sent me a birthday card. My sister and I have not talked in going on 5 years. She sent me a birthday card. My Ma sent me a card with $20 bucks. LOL I don't recall her ever doing that. My girlfriend I hadn't spoken to in I think almost a year sent me a birthday card.
What is going on??!!!
I am interested in doing little things to make a co-worker or family member have a good feeling of being cared about or remembered that day.
I used to dread, to the point of refusal, to speak at AA meetings. Just the past couple of weeks I've noticed that as much as I don't particularly like it at this point, I don't refuse and I'm not so bad at it afterall. I really do have something to offer and I am developing my own style of communication. I don't have to sound like the long-timers. I am learning that there are serious bounderies that need to be made in AA. I am learning that there are some people with a lot more time than me and I am having a very hard time believing him/her because of their behavior. Then there are people with so very little time under their belt you can FEEL their heartache.
I understand when people get up to share and the first thing they say is a thanks to God because if it wasn't for God they would not be sober.
I understand that now. They are not just spouting words to sound good.
They are speaking the truth.
I also understand that there is so much I don't understand so I sit in a middle chair so I can have a good view to listen and not be distracted.
I understand you have to listen to what you don't want to hear and take action when you don't want to take action.
Thank you, Jim for finding the key to my ride.
