Alcoholism Support Group
Alcoholism is the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, even when it is negatively affecting your health, work, relationships and life. If you think alcohol is causing you to lose control, it's time to seek help. Our group is a safe place to vent, check in, get back up if you fall, and reach sobriety.
I have a son, 21, who partied the summer he went off to college, partied in college - left because of it; took time off before going to a local college and then WOW - overnight his life seemed to improve 100 fold. Straight A's, happy, wonderful girlfriend, got a part time job he liked -etc.
Then last spring he came to us and said he has a drinking problem. What? With normal sleeping patterns, balanced moods, great grades, responsible......... how can this be? For the first time he's exhibited healthy and grown up behavior! My husband and I were thrown for a loop, being that our youngest son's drug problem was extremely noticeable.
Anyway, when we told him we can get help for him he said he'd handle it on his own and had actually cut back.
Before I go any further - I KNOW that there are people who hide their drinking problems very well (unlike our youngest son's obvious drug problem) but my husband is more perplexed than me since he lived with it as a kid. He said his mom's and brother's behaviors were undeniable.
Anyway - do you know or have any of you been able to hide your drinking and fool almost everybody and, if so ~ how long did it take before the troubles started coming to the surface? As I know everybody's story is different - just trying to get some insight. I asked my son's gf if she knew anything and she said he seems to be doing better - no more sweating and chills. Great....... guess the cutting back isn't working.

I understand your concern. When your son told you he had a drinking problem, did he ask for help?
If he's having sweating and chills when he cuts back, he may require medical supervision to stop. You seem like a good mom. Hopefully, he'll take the help if you offer it.
When I told him I thought I was an alcoholic, he didn't understand or agree b/c I went to work, took care of our son and house, didn't drink during the day, wasn't a 'belligerent drunk', ext. But those facts didn't take away from the fact that I drank in excess everyday, and that I felt horrible about the amount that I drank, and that I would try to not drink daily, only to fail.
If your son has realized his problem before "the troubles stared coming to the surface," that great!
