Alcoholism Support Group
Alcoholism is the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, even when it is negatively affecting your health, work, relationships and life. If you think alcohol is causing you to lose control, it's time to seek help. Our group is a safe place to vent, check in, get back up if you fall, and reach sobriety.

Hi --
This is day 1 for me. This is at least my fifth time trying to stop drinking. The longest I've gone is 11 or 12 days.
The first time I really decided I wanted to stop drinking was in January of this year. There have been times when I've given up on giving up drinking and so that's why this is my fifth time and we are in April and I haven't stopped for longer than 12 days.
I have been an on again off again participant on this forum as well as attending online AA meetings. I downloaded the 12 step book to my Kindle but have not actually read it.
I'm curious to hear from others how long they have been sober and what they have done to help them accomplish it.

Have you ever read a book that made you want to travel somewhere? (And if so, did you ever actually travel there?)

Bob e says on his tapes AAers reminded him of the dysfunction in his family and he was familiar with that but when push came to shove after some real time sober he needed therapy to unhinge his need to stay as rigid as he was raised.... I've found that a textbook definition in why resistance revolves around the need for control!! Blind-spots are not necessarily a bad thing once you can put a face on it!!!
I have friend Larry The Legend hehe who used to say Routines in your first year or 2 sober may only set in motion a New more sneaky way of "Acting as If " I guess it depends on how enmeshed your disposition , temperament and Personality traits are after finding a new approach to a newer kinda way at looking at what unencumbered means... there is a saying...When your ass is up to alligators you'll learn to respect the alligators and utilize why you feel that way wherever you are Or snot :)) !!

Anyone out there on day 1, 5, 10, 30? Hands up and well done :)

Coca cola and Charm Pops helped me especially because I was a beer drinker and beer contains a lot of sugar.
And the book Living Sober which helped me tremendously because it gives a lot of practical advice especially when I had cravings.
The steps really have helped in my sobriety. But for me, I had to have someone help me with them.
Congratulations on day 1.
A couple of our fellow forumers have recommend Allan Carrs The Easy Way to Stop Drinking.I am waiting to get my copy in the mail this sometime this week. And have been listening to Podcast about recovery frequent throughout the day. That helps keep me plugged in.
Hope you found this helpful
I wish you luck Rich and welcome :)
I would be interested in discussing your thoughts on the book after you've read it so please e-mail me here when you're done reading it.

I will :)
You have to throw EVERYTHING at this disease, as it is fearless and will throw everything it has to keep you sick. Take Care!
I got married then and went to my husband's country. We had our last drink on a bus tour one night and I haven't looked back.
He (and I, now) are Muslim and we decided to live our lives as best as we can. One of those commitments we made was to not have alcohol (and smoking, too) in our lives.
I won't lie; sometimes I crave it. But for the most part, I am SO elated I shed those two evils from my life. Yes- they are evil. They kill and are responsible for horrible things and have no place in a family.
My passion for God and my children give me the strength to keep those two enemies at bay.
Of course, as I've said before, my longest period is only 12 days so I need to get past that "hump" to really feel like I'm in new territory.
