Alcoholism Support Group
Alcoholism is the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, even when it is negatively affecting your health, work, relationships and life. If you think alcohol is causing you to lose control, it's time to seek help. Our group is a safe place to vent, check in, get back up if you fall, and reach sobriety.

Glad you are here and sober today. I have been sober since March 28th 2011. Before that I tried for years to get and stay sober and would always talk myself into drinking that first drink again. And that's the one that got me drunk; and got me back into that cycle of desperation and I couldn't stop and stay stopped on my own. Because of all those failed attempts I was desperate. And desperation got me to AA and AA has been the key to my sobriety. Simple as that.
Good luck Rich.. im right here with you.

Six years and ten months but I like the one about the person with the longest sobriety being whoever got up the earliest today.
I tried it on my own and read all sorts of inspirational stuff on the internet but could not stop drinking. I tried religion too and I believe that there was nothing wrong with the religion but it did not enable me to stop drinking. Down through the years I looked in many places for that missing something but I had no idea what the something was. Desperation drove me to an AA meeting and it was there that I have found the answers to many things that had baffled me before and I have not taken a drink since.
Today I sorted out some daily chores, ate when I was hungry, spoke to some friends to vent the space between my ears and went to an AA meeting. Checked in here before bed and drinking is not an option.
See you back here tomorrow for day 2,207...morning roll call :))

Regardless of sober time, we all started with Day 1. You can do this. If you truly don't want to drink anymore, there is a solution.....

It's funny... there are some people here who say they could not have gotten sober on their own and needed AA. Not the same for me. AA was not helpful to me. Thank goodness AA is not a requirement for sobriety, or I would still be drinking!
What I did to get and stay sober changed from the first days, weeks, months and years, because what I needed changed. At first I needed to get through the cravings no matter what. Then i needed to create strategies to change how I feel about alcohol.
I'd be happy to tell you more details if you are interested.
