Alcoholism Support Group
Alcoholism is the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, even when it is negatively affecting your health, work, relationships and life. If you think alcohol is causing you to lose control, it's time to seek help. Our group is a safe place to vent, check in, get back up if you fall, and reach sobriety.
I used to like the phrase, "Expect the worst and you'll never be disappointed."
Then I realized that I had nothing to look forward to if I expected the worst all the time.
Pessimistic? Not really. As I've gotten older I've gradually realized that the joy that comes as a result coping with adversity lasts long after the satisfaction of getting what I wanted is forgottten.
When I was newly sober, I used to look forward to tomorrow just to get another sober day under my belt. Also, because some of my days sucked at the beginning. Good stuff kiddo.
I could die in my sleep, but even then, I have a schedule I keep and a routine I follow. I am pretty sure tho that ifn I did die tonite in my sleep, my house wouldnt get vacuumed tomorrow.
Only GOD knows tomorrow really, and HE will give me the strength needed to carry it out.
"Hope is realistic anticipation which takes the form of determination, not only to survive adversity but, moreover, to 'endure well' to the end." (Neal A. Maxwell)
I like to think I can hope for the best, expect adversity, and manage as best I can when things don't turn out the way I "want". Hope and preparedness can coexist. The joy discovered in overcoming adversity is no greater than the joy experienced in realizing hopes.
What about those who encounter adversity over and over and fail to overcome it? What keeps them going but hope for a better outcome next time? What, except hope, can lift someone from despair?
It all looks very different to me at 70 than it did at 34. My priorities have changed as I've aged, and like mosr geezers, it's my memories are the metaphors that give satisfaction and meaning to my life now. The trick, if there is one, is to let go of old hopes when better ones appear, even if they appear disguised as trouble.
Hope, now that is the thread forward...
