Alcoholism Support Group
Alcoholism is the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, even when it is negatively affecting your health, work, relationships and life. If you think alcohol is causing you to lose control, it's time to seek help. Our group is a safe place to vent, check in, get back up if you fall, and reach sobriety.

Good morn alcoholics!! Season's Greetings and all that!
I will say that waking up not hungover is quite a thing on a Sunday. Facts are Saturday is a danger zone for so many of us, given Sunday is "recovery day" for many, and add the holiday parties, it can be a lot.
I am relieved that I am sober this Christmas. I haven't drank since July, which is not something I was certain i could really do if asked a few years ago. My husband believes "it's all behind me", and despite my brother literally dying at the age of 42 from drinking (and covid but also liver failure), I don't know if anybody is really ever done. Anyone who has been to a meeting has likely heard about people sober X years and relapsing.
My close friend had some issues with the law and quit drinking for a year. I was so proud of her, her streak was longer than mine and felt she had a handle on it. She said, as a single woman, Friday nights are the worst. It is a head game. She wants to decompress after her work week. She met a guy, of course he likes to drink, and she was casually joining him here and there despite explaining her struggle. He didn't care. (Can u say red flag?) It was a new relationship, and he became threatening and she didn't feel safe, and in the country with no service and no options she drove with alcohol in her system and hit a bad patch of road and flipped her SUV.
The vehicle caught on fire, and she had to heroically punch her windshield out to escape. Thank God she is a fitter, more spry person than I as likely I would be toast.
Of course she wakes in hospital handcuffed to bed! They found alcohol and she was put before a judge and then night in jail after released from medical. Now her life is spiralled, another long climb out with massive fines and license loss and likely probation. It is so dark, so fucking apocalyptic, that I wish I could take her to an island and get her head out of it for awhile.
So yeah, it never stops destroying. I was at Tim Horton's yesterday morn to buy a Cruller and coffee, letting the twilight sparkle kick around my head, and, kids in school, that moment hits me. I could be a sneeky bitch and buy a bottle of champagne right now, have my own private morning party.
I have to whip my brain back to reality. I have the grim death of my only sibling hanging over me. I may think i am having a Marilyn moment with mimosa, but am actually Snooky like a bottle rocket set off in the house. I have a wall. I have a husband and two sons who will make my life a living hell if they think I'm drinking. It's like that.
Obviously i am grateful. I have been given love. I have people who stop me from destroying myself. That's everything when you have a disease of addiction. Though, to be honest, I think addicts exploit that a lot. You love me! You HAVE TO PUT UP WITH THIS. Do they? My brother was a beautiful person, and Coldplay/Radiohead/Eliot Smith fan, a guy who really loved golf and was truly a gentle natured person. And like Eliot Smith, he committed his own suicide by booze. He gave up on his life.
People. Gave. Up. On. Him. He died alone. He died for weeks in the hospital and despite promises no one messaged him. No one picked up a phone. Goodbye alcoholic who dies alone, forgotten by the world.

check out that smoke ring. It tasted really good. I smothered it with Maulls BBQ sauce which is Local to St. Louis and one of the best I ever had.....

I was recently separated from my wife of 33 years and it's complicated. Anyway I rented a room about 15 minutes away and I see my kids about once a week. I see the people who own the house I live in once in a while but other than that I stay in my room where I do my cooking, wash dishes in the shower, read, color, and sleep. I get out at least once a day. I grocery shop and I attend 2 meetings...

We all have options in life. We can play russian roulette with the bottle or we can do everythng it takes to get sober.
I went through outpatient treatment and was given the tools I needed to help me stay sober. I stopped trying to fix others and I focused on myself. I learned to let go of the past and live in the present. That was 14 years ago. Now I have a great life and I have never been happier.
God Bless
I second your feeling of being relieved to wake up sober. I'm 10 weeks in and I feel great about it. I also understand completely your "sneaky bitch" moments. My brain goes there sometimes, too. When my brain starts thinking, "it wasn't that bad" I have to interrupt it with, "Yes, yes it was that bad..." then I go on with my sobriety (thanks 1-2 for that, it is my mantra).
Your stories are a good reminder to stay the course. I'm sorry for what you have gone through with the loss of your brother and your friend's accident. I am happy for you, though, that you have a good support group. It does make a big difference.
Happy Holidays!
~~~Peace~~~
Congrats on the six months, I remember your early days here on this group, and that is such an achievement, you had such a huge loss with your brother, and here you are today - Sober - sending you a big, warm virtual hug right now.
How sad for your friend, she had a year under her belt, and starts drinking again cos of a man, that couldn't have cared less about her sobriety or her obviously, otherwise he would have supported her & encouraged her to stay sober. I could think of nothing worse, than start drinking again cos of a man that is so selfish that he had no concerns, except for himself.
I have one year and a half sober now, like you and It's about time, have that occasional thought about having a drink for one day (like christmas day), then I think about going back to day one and starting all over again, and I tell that thought to just 'fuck off' and go on about my day :)
Gotta ask - what is a 'Cruller' ???
Take care x
And the tougher question; why do I go to the break-myself-down mode so easily. I've been looking closely at this for my whole sober ride and am getting increasingly honest with myself about the answer.
What's capers precious?.. (from the scene in Lord of the Rings....taters)...
@imheretoo, 10 weeks is amazing!
I’ve watched you struggle in and out for the whole time. Honestly I didn’t think you would ever make it this far ... only one in 100 make it never to drink again.
So congrats, now the only way to stay is to believe that life is better without booze.
For years and even sometimes now I get that itch that says , a couple would be ok. Then I remember having to : manage getting , drinking, and concealing my booze.
It was exhausting.
The thing is that my body doesn’t process alcohol like others. And that’s where I have to remember I’m a booze hound. I will sniff it out in the middle of the day or night. I will find it if I want it. But today I don’t want it... took a lot of time but it gets easier every day
Soooooo at this point your body is not physically addicted but your mind is. And will be till ... I found that booze was a escape , a diversion for real life
Beware the jealous and envy emotions. The holidays will find you around booze and boozers. Twinkling lights and .... emotions, feelings, and that fear inside me comes up to the surface. Anxiety and stress... those are heavier around holidays
So do this, when THOSE thoughts of booze come up, and they will and keep coming, tell yourself that you won’t drink that rat poison. It’s poison to me ( even dressed up in a twinkly glass and shiny bottles. It will kill me, because once I drink one, it’s katie bar the door and we’re getting it all in my throat. Like a rat I will keep going back to the trap and eventually die a rat
Imagine this time next year when you are a year and a half. , now that is a good thing to see rather than the bottom of that bottle
Peace , Love , and sober , you got this
1-2
Forgive and live
Say a prayer and tell him that you forgive him because he chose booze, you don’t blame him, you blame the disease, and that you will live 2x life for him amen
