HI, I just felt like sharing. I'm 6 years sober - this time - and am currently feeling really happy about it. I feel like I'm sane, because when I think about the last time I drank (for 11 days), I can only remember the sickness. I felt so empty, and devoid of any joy or spirituality. The only thing I had going in my life was to get drunk again.
I''m just happy to have no desire to drink at the moment, to be aware of all the negatives, to understand that I can't drink with any safety or success.
I feel free to live my life, and I feel a sense of well being and peace.
It's worth it to hang in there! It's worth it to white knuckle it through those desires to drink, to take a day at a time. It's worth it to reach out for help when I've felt like drinking, to desperately read the Big Book, ring someone, get to a meeting, and pray. To put off the first drink for one more day.
I am an AA member, and I believe I wouldn't be sober now if not for that, because I've come close to drinking again, especially early on. If I hadn't gone to a meeting on those particular days, I wouldn't have been able to resist temptation. I'm not someone who thinks AA is terrific, and the answer to everything, but I do appreciate that it keeps me sober. I love hearing other people's stories, I love remembering that i'm an alcoholic, and what a wonderful thing it is to be sober.
I've learnt from past experience, that this too can change. I might get the urge to drink again one day. I've got tools for when this occurs. It helps to remember that I'm not cured!

I feel simiarly about AA. I'm so grateful to the program, the people, the women in particular, who have helped me. i needed help. I was afraid to ask, afraid to identify as alcoholic, afraid that I was unique. I've found AA to be so helpful and its been the key to my sobriety. Like you I need those reminders, and that's why I keep going back. Same thing for this forum.
And I wish you many many more!
I too feel the same way as you about AA. But without AA, I wouldn't be
sober.
