Alcoholism Support Group
Alcoholism is the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, even when it is negatively affecting your health, work, relationships and life. If you think alcohol is causing you to lose control, it's time to seek help. Our group is a safe place to vent, check in, get back up if you fall, and reach sobriety.

I've tried so many ways to lose weight, but can't seem to do it. I'm scheduled for gastric bypass surgery in just over 8 weeks.
I don't want to do this, but I guess I want my life back more than I don't want to do this. You can quit drinking, you can quit smoking, you can quit drugging but you can't quit eating.
I guess my controversial stance about other addictions not being outside issues comes , in part, from my own experience of switching addictions. I'm not sure which addiction will be next. I'm 50 plus and married nearly 25 years so sex addiction is out of thje question! LOL
All kidding aside I feel like I should be able to do this with my program and without surgery, but my health won't wait forever for me to figure it out.

I invited Bill to have dinner with me last Sunday. He wasn't willing to drive 7 hours to mid Michigan and teased me with his beautiful ribs!!! So, of course I ate alone and had cedar salmonĀ

check out that smoke ring. It tasted really good. I smothered it with Maulls BBQ sauce which is Local to St. Louis and one of the best I ever had.....

Billy
best of luck and will be praying for you.
Having said that, I must say that I don't think it's always easy to maintain a healthy weight and I've struggled with this issue for most of my adult life. (I had a harder time keeping my weight down when I was drinking, as a matter of fact.) And I've often felt like a failure -- that it's something that I should have been able to do just by sheer will power. So, I feel your pain.
Right now, I'm gaining weight very rapidly because of the medicine I take, and dieting does nothing. It's a metabolism thing. Sigh.
I'm sorry that you have to resort to surgery to lose weight but it sounds as though that is what it's going to take. I hope it works great for you!!! And that the surgery itself goes well!! (((((Hugs)))))
Good for you. :-)

I just want you to know that this can and does work for many. But I am sure you have been told to get support after. Lots of folks slowly put the weight back on when they do not re-learn how to soothe themselves other than food.
I remember Al Rocker (the weather guy) saying that after he had this surgery his moods were horrific, he could not soothe himself, and was really just mad all the time. He said he got over it, but it was damn hard. THis coming from a smiley weather guy.
So please be well, make sure you get follow up support. I know overeaters anonymous is out there-maybe that would be a great support.
Wishing you great success and health!
I'll send prayers your way. I'm sure everything will go fine.
And like Rob, I've heard many good things about GB surgery as well!
I have heard from many friends who have had the gastric bypass - that they became alcoholics when they could no longer self-medicate with food. I caution you to really put all of your focus into your Program. Wrap your mind around your Program rather than another substance, whether it be food, drug or drink. You might be accused of being addicted to your Program, but ... Heck, at least you will be healthy and alive!!
I will keep you posted
You can eat all those fish you catch too!
and no sneaking cigarettes during your recovery!
