Alcoholism Support Group
Alcoholism is the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, even when it is negatively affecting your health, work, relationships and life. If you think alcohol is causing you to lose control, it's time to seek help. Our group is a safe place to vent, check in, get back up if you fall, and reach sobriety.
The only way I personally found to get rid of the mental obsession was to work the 12 step program.
Prior to working the program I suffered from the mental obsession all the time I wasnt drinking and eventually gave into it everytime. It was beyond my mental control and the only thing to remove the pain of it was alcohol.
Since I worked the 12 steps I have not had the mental obsession - I have not wanted to drink. I never managed more than 3 weeks sober in my 17 years of active alcoholism. Since I worked the steps I have been sober and free from the mental obsession to drink for 6 1/2 years so in my experience it does work.
Where you are is a horrible place and sobriety would not be worth it if we had to spend our days tortured with the desire to drink.
My experience is that it doesnt have to be that way. There is a way to become free from the terrible grip that alcohol has on us.
I see you wrote this post over 8 hours ago, so I hope you were able to hang in there. You have come SO FAR!! You just survived that whole out of town gig w/o drinking. That's HUGE!!! That shows incredible strength.
I agree with the others. Do something to distract yourself when you think you want to drink alcohol. Do your best friends know you've quit drinking? If they do, you could call them. Mine were more than willing to be there to talk me down at 3:00a.m. if that's what I needed. (I never had to make that call, but just knowing I COULD if I had to was helpful.)
I KNOW you can do this. I'm sure everyone's brains get a little wobbley in early sobriety. I know mine did. It gets easier, I PROMISE, and it is so worth it to stay sober.
I thought that "I Am Your Disease" post somebody dredged up the other day was so helpful. One of the quotes that really sticks with me is, "I [Alcoholism] provide you with instant gratification, and all I ask in return is long term suffering." How scary and how true is THAT??!!
Stay strong!! I KNOW YOU CAN DO THIS!!!
I survived the wobble :)
I couldnt think of anything else to do - so i went to my mums for a few days - she knows my problems, so i could just cry it out. I stayed there until today. Though I found i was being checked on lol. my sisters were sent in to keep me company when i would go to bed.
Anyway, I woke up this morning and felt strong enough to go. And guess what. Its been 30 days!!!!!!!!!!
30 DAYS SOBER, dont get me wrong I still wanted to drink, but i stayed away from it.
But 30 days - that i huge to me.
Thank you so much for everyones support and all the hugs.
