Alcoholism Support Group
Alcoholism is the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, even when it is negatively affecting your health, work, relationships and life. If you think alcohol is causing you to lose control, it's time to seek help. Our group is a safe place to vent, check in, get back up if you fall, and reach sobriety.
Sharing in meetings is not a requirement; in fact some sponsors won't even allow it in the beginning, so I'm not buying that as a excuse for why you continue to relapse.
I'm sorry if I sound harsh. I know that for some people it takes a number of trips in and out of the rooms before they finally catch on to the fact it never gets better and always gets worse. But LOLing about having enough white chips to make a shower curtain just ticks me off because this is life-or-death to us. We are not simply "on the wagon." I hope you figure that out sooner rather than later.
By all means, continue to post and share whatever is on your mind. We want to be helpful. In your meetings just listen and try to relate. Get a sponsor. Work the first step as if your life depended on it, because it does. I sincerely wish you success this time around.
I agree with Laura....my sponsor said she went in and out for 3 years before she stuck. She's just celebrated 30 years of sobriety.
I went into my first meeting on March 28th of 2011. I got a sponsor on April 2nd. So far through great sponsorship, the 12 steps and a loving God of my understanding that I was re aquinted with....I've stayed.
I don't always share in meetings. A sponsee of mine who now has 9 months didnt share for the first 6. Its not a requirement.
Try to look at this as really a fresh start. Try perhaps to put out of your mind what you think you know about AA.
Maybe grab a sponsor?
Tis good that you're sober. As Sticky says there is no requirement to share anything at an AA meeting. The only requirement is a desire to stay sober. Tis easy to start fufilling that desire by listening. I find that by the time it gets around to me on many occasions - everyone else has already said most everything I thought of.
You'll finally reach out for a sponsor when you find that the imagined pain of doing the steps will be less than the pain of staying as you are. When you decide you want what others have. When you find that trust and love easily replaces fear and pain.
Until then - observe away and keep coming back till the miracle happens...
Hugs,
Dennis.
Having had A spiritual awakening (the only known Solution to chronic alcoholism) as THE result of THESE STEPS (not meetings) we tried to carry THIS measage to alcoholics.
That is what I just did.
God bless you and yours
Dear God (as I understand him)
please set aside everything I think I know
About myself,
this book,
my disease,
these steps,
and especially about you dear God
so that I might have an open mind And a new experience with all these things.
Please help me to see the truth.
Don't separate yourself from the AA pack - that's ego talking and ego loves to get us in jackpots, doesn't it? We are a part of, not apart from. Don't need to share for a while. Listening is just as good if not a better thing to be attuned to. Get into the middle of AA - sponsor, step work...you won't regret it. You can then also toss out that shower curtain. :)
