I know my grandfather was on them, he got very ill if he drank. it cured him of a life long habit, had cirrohsis of the liver. ended up living way longer than expected because he stopped drinking.

the key is to be vigilant in taking it. everyone i know played around with it. got sick a few times, determined how long after they could drink and not get sick and so on and so on. not a miracle cure, in my estimation. love. devonh

I have a good friend that has been on and off it for the past several years. It does act as a deterrent but even he admits that it is no sub for a recovery program.

He did slip while he took it. It made it him VERY ill. He had to go the hospital once when it happened. I wouldn't mess around with it if you think you are going to drink. I heard it takes at least 3 days before it leaves you system.

I was prescribed them early on in my recovery (in conjunction with a 12 step programme) and even though I didn't take them every day - I found them helpful. I googled and read up on all the possibilities of what would happen and scared the crap outta myself about the thought of drinking when on them. I found them helpful not so much on normal stay home nights, but when or if for some reason I had a big temptation put in my way. ie. A friend brought me round a cask of wine and it was sitting on my bench driving me nuts and I knew if it stayed there I would drink it. So I took an antabuse so that I couldn't - and got rid of it the next day. I found it a really helpful deterrent.

Hi denzal, this is my second time on them. They work for me,I tried having a drink four days off the pill and felt very ill...my heart beat was going very fast and it felt like my head was going to pop off it was very hot...like all the blood rushed to my head. I like them because befor i have an urge to drink..I at least have to think about it! I definitely recommend them

If you drink on Antabuse it will cause your heart rate to accelerate and you could die from a massive heart attack. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DRINK WHILE TAKING ANTABUSE. I have seen one person die from doing it... he was standing next to me and suddenly POW! He dropped like a rock, dead before he hit the ground. His BAC was only .11.

I wonder why you are asking about symptoms if you are considering drinking on it? My father did when I was a kid two times. It was so horrific I will never forget it! I dont know if much about antabuse, wether it is to cure you or deture you. His alcoholism was so bad he drank on it TWO TIMES!
After he we crazy running through our neighborhood naked and almost dieing they took him in an ambulance almost it almost killed him. Antabuse for my Dad did not deture him. He eventually died as I burried him in 04,at the age of 57 not from antabuse but from alcohol poisoning.

They stopped me for 10 months, then like an idiot I took a drink, the people in A & E were not very impressed, I also occupied a hospital bed that I am sure could have gone to better use.

Yes they work, and yes they can be a good thing, have friends that swear by them, but whatever you don't drink as in some cases it can be fatal

They can make you deathly ill or at least seem like you are dieing, i took anabuse and drank on it, almost had a heartattack.

antabuse has its place for some alkies...
however,, if you are thinking about going to AA,,, here is what the Big book says about things like this>>.

Very, very dangerous. This gal got on it, but she did not drink w/ it. Today she is still sober w/o it. Good luck, and STAY away from alcohol. It's weird stuff, like it will react to certain food. You will get a phamplet or information if you decide to try it. Be very careful....God bless
