My niece's Dad is an alkie. Early Sat. morning at around 2:30am he was in a horrible car accident and was pronounced dead at the scene. There was another car involved with two young ladies. Both are barely alive.
On weekends her Dad plays in a band to pick up a few extra bucks.
It is a very, very good bet he was drinking and driving. Weather and driving conditions are not good in Minnesota this time of year. We may not ever know the reason for the accident but I'll bet a million bucks he was drinking.
My poor niece lost her father at 16 years.

My heart and prayers go out to your niece and her Dad. It's a tragic reminder of the destruction alcoholism can cause, not just to ourselves, but those we love, and the strangers who cross our paths. My prayers to the two young ladies in hospital.

I thank God that I never killed anyone when I was drinking. I used to drive with my kids in the car when I was drinking and when I was so hungover that I could barely see. I don't think I could live with a death on my conscience. I would rather die than have that to live with. MADD has reduced deaths caused by drinking by more than half. Kudos to them.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Thank you for sharing this, as it re-affirms my sobriety for me. It was a DUI that started me on the path. Thankfully, no accident involved.

Thank you everybody for your kinds words.
The news reports are saying that he ran a stop sign and broadsided the women. The women did not suffer critical injuries, thank goodness!
It is currently under investigation by the Medical Examiner's office and the Police force.
It's a sure bet he was drinking. The guy never missed a day of drinking. Not one. Beer and Rum daily.
That being said. Let's say he had a life insurance policy and his blood level was above legal limit. Wouldn't the claim be denied cuz he was drinking AND the cause of his own death? If so, my niece was left nothing. His mother is pretty "comfortable" to say the least. Oh...and Tom Brokaw is his cousin. His claim to fame.....

I don't know why that should keep his daughter from getting the life insurance..She wasn't the one drinking and driving. You know. I mean, that would be Awful!
