Alcoholism is the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, even when it is negatively affecting your health, work, relationships and life. An acquaintance/friend of mine died yesterday. He was an active alcoholic, who had been in and out of rehab for YEARS, had 8 DUI's, was known to turn into an angry/HIGHLY abusive Man...but only when he was REALLY drunk and you pissed him off. lol
He woke up the other morning, vomiting blood, crawled into the office (he lived behind a body shop in a trailer) and passed out. They called an ambulance, he was taken to the ER, where they discovered that 9 arteries/veins in his esophagus were blown. They banded them together and some how, he survived that, but they pulled the plug the next morning, because the Dr. said, best cast scenario, his liver will never function again..amongst other things.
Apparently, he had several SERIOUS drinking related ailments, and never went to the Dr., nor gave up drinking. He was of the mentality that "it's better to burn out, than fad away' and he had partied HARD Thur. night.
On many occasions, he and I talked about AA...especially when I quit drinking, and he said that he never "bought in" to the "AA BS"...as he'd only gone to re-hab because it was that or prison. He had resigned himself to the fact that he was a drunk. And he always told me he commended me for quitting "so easily"
Well Herb (that was his name) It's not easy!! You have to be willing to give up your demons and live life on it's terms. And it's not easy to watch someone die from alcoholism either...but whenever there's another empty bar stool...it just reminds me of why I don't drink.
I don't want to be a face on the wall of some bar.

Thank you for sharing this - it is a reminder of what can happen if we keep drinking. Once someone starts to hemorrhage internally - there is never a guarantee that it will stop.

I feel for you, my brother is probably in about as bad physically as I've ever seen him.
My father died in 1980 right on my living room floor. He was an alcoholic and heavy smoker.
My dad's brothers have all lived into their 90s and I suppose my dad would have too if he hadn't started drinking at the age of 42.
I'm so worried about my brother but he's 2 states away from me but there's nothing I can do anyway.
I know there's a funeral coming soon for him.
His name on here was Dipsodan, among other names he used off and on over the years.
my dear friend, mark, was found dead a few months ago in a hotel room leaving behind a wife and 2 children. the death certificate says chronic alcoholism. my roommate lost his wife, a nurse, to the disease. she died virtually in the street and after he got sober his girlfriend and my friend, patty, died IN THE HOSPITAL ER of alcohol withdrawal. they could not save her.
we lose too many. the big book talks about KING Alcohol. KING Alcohol is right. seems i've tried everything but nothing and i mean nothing ever whipped my ass like alcohol.
and, yes, getting and staying sober requires a lot of work. it is not easy. in fact, for me, there has been nothing harder.
