Alcoholism Support Group
Alcoholism is the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, even when it is negatively affecting your health, work, relationships and life. If you think alcohol is causing you to lose control, it's time to seek help. Our group is a safe place to vent, check in, get back up if you fall, and reach sobriety.

My husband and I are in marriage counseling right now. The counselor says he is an alcoholic and I am severely codependent. He does drink at night when he leaves work, but he doesn't drink during the day like I guess I would expect a "normal" alcoholic would. I can't believe it but I think I am the one in denial that my husband may be an alcoholic! He doesn't accept it either though - he says he will "cut down" once he quits smoking. Wow - as I am typing I am realizing how stupid that sounds.....how do I learn to accept it? How do I tell the kids? UGH

check out that smoke ring. It tasted really good. I smothered it with Maulls BBQ sauce which is Local to St. Louis and one of the best I ever had.....

I was recently separated from my wife of 33 years and it's complicated. Anyway I rented a room about 15 minutes away and I see my kids about once a week. I see the people who own the house I live in once in a while but other than that I stay in my room where I do my cooking, wash dishes in the shower, read, color, and sleep. I get out at least once a day. I grocery shop and I attend 2 meetings...

I think you should keep an open mind and give serious consideration to what your counselor says. Educate yourself about alcoholism and co-dependency. Give yourself time to accept whatever truth you discover.
Just a thought for I think you already have the answer. and the co-dependence issue I would get educated on it and stop.
There is a good group on the ds site.

Alcoholism has been called a family disease in that one's addiction negatively affects the entire family! Addicts are also very good at lying. If he said he will cut back, he probably won't or if he does it will not last for long.
I think you have to ask yourself how long you want to live like that, with alcohol controling both you and your husband?
I highly recommend al anon for you. You can google meetings in your area. You need alot of support and alanon will provide support. You will meet others like you and learn how they deal with codependancy issues and made their lives happier and more enriching as a result.
In the meantime we will keep you in our thoughts and prayers!

As far as alcoholic qualifications; anyone who is justifying their drinking to a spouse, likely has a problem at a minimum.
I was an alcoholic who maintained an incredibly successful career, and didnt drink before 6 p.m. almost ever. The times I did were for parties where everyone was drinking too. In fact I was so successfully deceptive, that when I decided I needed to get sober my husband didnt quite believe I was alcoholic, nor did my family or friends. Go figure. But I can assure you I most certainly was/ am.
