Alcoholism Support Group
Alcoholism is the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, even when it is negatively affecting your health, work, relationships and life. If you think alcohol is causing you to lose control, it's time to seek help. Our group is a safe place to vent, check in, get back up if you fall, and reach sobriety.

I'm curious as to why you need others to agree with your opinion in order to feel comfortable with it?
I'm very comfortable with the fact that I'm an alcoholic. I don't know exactly how or when I became alcoholic. To me its highly irrelevant to my recovered state.
A combination of nature/ nurture/ environmental? Maybe. Cancer and other diseases occur due to a myriad of factors too.
Disease or condition or reaction. I won't pick up a drink today no matter what. I'm comfortable with that.
Yes, that's my opinion and I'm pretty sure I stated that it was my opinion. There are many, many people who share my opinion and who reject the "disease" theory. This is a forum where people....well......state there opinions and discuss them. You believe that you have a permanent disease and that only a "spiritual" solution is the answer. That's fine, that's your opinion and you are welcome to it as well. Other people don't buy it. The vast majority of people (over 75%) recover on their own with no "program" or "spiritual guidance". Those people believe that to use or not to use is a choice and that learning better coping/life skills is all that is necessary to effect positive changes in their lives. They don't believe that they are powerless or that they need to surrender their Will or their Lives to a higher power of their choice.
It's two completely opposite mindsets. I think both sides should have the opportunity to have their say. I know this site is inundated with those who follow the 12 step methodology and that's their choice, there is nothing wrong with discussing ideas that have come along the pike since the 1930's when 12 Step faith healing was the only game in town.
What I said (its there in black and white) is it doesn't matter to me how I got where I am today. I am both happy with where I am (recovered) and comfortable that I don't need to solve the equation of why.
90% of folks with a wound sort it out with a band aid...but tell that to the guy with a slit throat :)
Always Beware greeks bearing gifts and folks who found all the answers where others failed :)

As for this post....Does it really matter how someone gets sober? If its working then more power to ya! I dont have the need to be right only to be sober and happy. I'm glad there is choices, Im also glad for this sight and having all of you. Lets not forget why we are here...Too encourage each other...Peace
Even if one succeeds becoming substance free without treating an underlying mental condition our sobriety is very painful and more of a chore with the return to alcohol use after varying lengths of sobriety more frequent. The idea that one is a failure and it is because one failed to implement the 12 steps correctly or go to enough meetings into their lives can be very harmful.
So, in my case my addictive drinking is a symptom of an underlying mental condition. Once that was brought under control staying away from booze became easier and the work necessary to become relatively happy could begin in earnest.
Having a bi-polar person turn their life over to and seek out God's will for them is a bit dangerous, because doing that leads even "balanced" people to look for signs. Bi-polar people can get very sick looking for supernatural signs.
Faith and spirituality, if one is so inclined, can be helpful in overcoming obstacles and keeping one in a good frame of mind while other treatment is pursued. Making a spiritual experience the key for recovery from addictive alcoholic drinking is antiquated at best...
