A New Earth

Is anyone reading the book A New Earth by Echart Tolle? I'm about 100 pages into it and even joined Oprah's online course which had a rediculous number of people on it that it rocked the virtual world. This book is such a hit but as I'm reading it, I'm thinking: "Ok, I learned that in AA." (Turn the page) "Yup, learned that in AA too." This brilliant man thinks he's got it all figured out, even has Oprah sitting on the edge of her seat marveling at his every word and all I can think is "Just go to AA, Bill W. knew all of this stuff 60 years ago!" Now THAT was a brilliant man. No, actually he was just an alcoholic who was touched by God to help the rest of us. :-) Sobriety is awesome!

I am not reading the book but would someone please tell me what it is about? I hear alot of people talking about it. thank you.

It's about "awakening" from your ego-based consciousness so that you can be free from anger, resentments, ect. and live a happy and fulfilled life. (In a nutshell, that's what I get out of it so far.)

Like lastvice says, it's kind of a rehash of AA stuff, but this guy claims the thoughts for himself. I just read about it on amazon.com and it's about getting free from "self" and ego, which is an AA idea. The reviewers say the book is a rehash of his former best sellers, such as "The Power of Now".

That's what I thought. Well, at least the rest of the world (those "other" earthly beings w/o alcoholism) will be able to get a taste of the steps through this book. :-)

Not familiar with this particular book, but I've had that same feeling with other "spiritual blockbusters" -- the public (or media, at least) is riveted by the profound insight, and I'm thinking, "uh, this is warmed-over AA."

I won't name names, but there's one guy who sells tons of DVDs and CDs, and is a mainstay of PBS pledge drives. I was watching him one time, and realized if he was saying this at an AA speaker meeting, it would have been mediocre.

I think Eckhard Tolle is awesome....I read the Power of Now in rehab and it truly changed how I look at things. That's cool that people can see an AA message in his-I think whatever gets this positive message to the masses is great. Ekhart Tolle's message is simple, living in the now is the truest path to happiness and enlightenment. And while this message may not seem completely original, Tolle's clearly delivers what "living in the now" means. I think he is the real deal, not some phony. We need this enlightment on this planet for the masses. Tolle is an excellent teacher.
