Alcoholism Support Group
Alcoholism is the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, even when it is negatively affecting your health, work, relationships and life. If you think alcohol is causing you to lose control, it's time to seek help. Our group is a safe place to vent, check in, get back up if you fall, and reach sobriety.
I am sure you can imagine how badly I wanted to jump in on the action. Lol. I felt better and better each day I stayed out of it. It's better I leave the fighting to those who can handle it better than I.
Hi Tread, good to see you, I hope that you are Happy Joyous and Free, RECOVERED from that Hopeless State of Mind and Body. God gave us a bucketful of EMOTIONS and I would not be without any of them, Fear, what power that has, fear protects me sometimes from myself and fear will not allow me to go swim with the large Sharks and large salt water Crocodiles we have here or run unto the road playing chicken with cars or trucks.
I will not bore you with going through all my wonderful God given EMOTIONS, but I can tell you that without ANGER I would not have gotten myself to AA and to RECOVERY, Wow ANGER what a motivator that emotion is, thank god I was so angry at where my life was heading that I made a decision to come to AA.
I met a man in AA that said ne no longer got angry, but when I spilt my cup of tea on the arm of his shirt, thank God he instantly reassured me he was not robotic by getting his anger back real quick, no, we are not ROBOTS, why do you think God in his wisdom gave us all our EMOTIONS, but like all emotions we have to keep check on them, its not how I feel or think, but what I do about the feeling, I am responsible for the action I am not responsible for feeling or thoughts just what I do with them.
The Big Book tells us that the grouch (sulking and miserable, sometimes for weeks) and the brainstorm (episodes of rage, damage to property etc) that is very different from not being angry.
Clearly it recognises that anger will arise and has to be dealt with because the grouch and the brainstorm are unhealthy and unhelpful ways in which to deal with anger.
What I have learned in recovery is to be able to handle my anger in an appropriate way - far more healthy than not allowing ourselves to be angry because in doing and believing that, we just swallow the anger we have without realising we are doing it. This makes us ill physically, mentally and spiritually, then we would be really in trouble!
And it's okay to be right about something and to stand up for yourself. Just do it nicely, without personal insults of any kind.
My 2 cents for tonight!
A couple of weeks ago, I kinda exploded a bit on one of my field techs on the phone and my boss said something about it. He was right, it is ridiculous for me to get loud & nasty in a room full of people and I don't want to react that way but most of the time, I don't realize that I'm freaking out!
I made 2 little signs that read "shhhhh.....simmer down Shelly" and gave one to each of my cube mates! lol! Of course they made me SWEAR that I wouldn't get mad when they raised it. haha!
But seriously, it has helped as a diversion. Last week, I started to get angry & loud and remembered that they had the signs and it brought my anger to my attention and I took a deep breath and calmed down. Hey! Whatever works right? :)
The teacher once told me - the one who angers us is the one who controls us - that has stuck in my head like you can't imagine - and since I am a control freak by nature - i was like - OH HECK NO - i will NOT be controlled by someone - thru anger or other means -
Anger happens, I normally put it prayer - i don't have the time or energy to waste on it any more.
Great post by the way!
Peace!
