Alcoholism Support Group
Alcoholism is the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, even when it is negatively affecting your health, work, relationships and life. If you think alcohol is causing you to lose control, it's time to seek help. Our group is a safe place to vent, check in, get back up if you fall, and reach sobriety.
That being said here is the difference. What we have to offer folks is our own experience. I could take someone that is addicted to marijuana because I have experience in working through the steps.
And though I have been addicted to drugs, not marijuana, but others then I have experience in that also. But if I am just an alcoholic then I would not be a good sponsor for someone that their addiction is marijuana.
Does that mean that you can't go to AA meetings? No
I know people that were drug addicts that go to AA. They say that it works better for them. However this is a program of honesty and to go into a meeting and say you are an alcoholic when you are not is not being all that honest is it?
You may get given a hard time from some folks so be prepared for that. But that is people giving their opinions and in my program their opinion is none of my business. I am there for my recovery and to help others recover. Nothing more and nothing less.
Have you looked into marijuana anonymous? I understand there are such meetings but have never looked into it.
Good luck to you and your sister in your quest for a clean and sober life. It is there for all of us if we want it badly enough. God Bless
I can see both points on whether drug addicts should attend closed discussion meetings.
However I most certainly do NOT agree with anyone saying they would be asked to leave (as I read on another thread), that is deplorable & seems to defeat the whole purpose of helping others.
I most certainly do not have an understanding of the steps, but I have read them many, many times. I've also learned some things here and there on DS and in meetings. Isn't it true that most anyone could benefit from the 12 steps? Even those who are not addicts? So, why then would an addict in need of support be shunned?
Your sister might benefit from checking this out.
