No one is ever doomed! I have two girls and they have been raised around AA and recovery. I don't have any fears for them. And, with all them eyes on them all the time, they'd be hard pressed to ever get as far in the disease as my ex-husband and I were.

Yeah thats what made me think about it again....how painful it must be to watch your kids go through what you did...and my mother probable thought the same thing as you...well she has told me.."you have seen were it got your father and I...ect." That did not stop me from doing it....shew, I dont know...I know I CAN NOT and do not blame them but I ended up just like them for a time....maybe if they never see alcohol being abused they wont do it?

I would say by doing the 4th step and writing down your fears is a great start on helping with this topic// as i dont' believe that a God is punishing.. if however it happens that my or your children end up being Alcoholic then we all have the tools to help and some children like spongeb and my own are already growing with the understanding of Alcohol...

I have to admit, I have worried about that as well. Granted I have never actually lived with alcoholism but nonetheless my life and my kids' lives have been affected by it and I have often wondered what is going to happen when they are old enough to make that choice. Before my ex-husband and I met he was a drinker (he stopped because he ended up in ER one night with a blood sugar level of 900!) ...he hasn't touched a drop in fifteen years....my bf is in recovery now but even before he quit the kids never saw him drinking...they unfortunately had to feel the aftershocks. The youngest of my kids are 2 and 5 and right now they don't really understand what is going on...should the time come, I hope I will be as open and honest with them as I have their older brothers. Right now my oldest son has seen too much and wants nothing to do with it!

Would it be fair to your kids or yourself if you didn't try. maybe that is the reason you are going through what you are. So you know how to teach your kids the right way.

Maybe try living in today,, tomorrow is not certain.
If you want to have kids someday, there is really nothing to worry about.

You put too much thought into it, if you want kids go have some, just be there for them and hope for the best that is all any of us can do. In my family alcoholism hits some and misses some, but you can't live your life worried about what may happen.

The same question applies to bipolar disorder which I have but I found out after having children. If you want children have them. Raise them right. You might also have a disabled child or one with a serious illness. Its a crapshoot. Just do your best to give them the tools to live a happy, productive life.

It's been proven that Alcoholism is genetic.

A study was done in Switzerland (or somewhere like that) about this. They found twins whose natural parents were alcoholics, and when given away after birth they went to 2 families. They found sets of twins where one was raised in an alcoholic home and the other was not, the were many cases in which both twins were alcoholics. It's interesting to read about.

My thoughts....don't think about it that way. You're projecting and then trying to make choices by looking at what might happen. If you have the love to give and want a child don't fear the unknown.
