Agoraphobia & Social Anxiety Support Group
Agoraphobia is an anxiety disorder, often precipitated by the fear of having a panic attack in a setting from which there is no easy means of escape. As a result, sufferers of agoraphobia may avoid public and/or unfamiliar places. In severe cases, the sufferer may become confined to their home, experiencing difficulty traveling from this "safe place."
1. Wear sunglasses. May seem silly, but it puts a buffer between you, and once you are a little more comfortable, take them off.
2. Behave As-if: Before you go out, take a deep breath and when you cross the threshold, act as if you have no anxiety. For the time until you need to walk back across the threshold, you act As_If you are a person who does not have anxiety.
3. Think about this, as often as needed: We spend our lives worrying and being anxious about events that if,in the remote possibility, they did happen, only last LESS THAN 10 SEC. What is the worse thing you can imagine happening? Stuttering, forgetting what you are saying? Again, less than 10 sec. Enjoy up until that point, and you will get through those 10 seconds, if they did come up.
Another thing you may want to visualize ifs that you have a husband. (I am assuming that the boys make you nervous, you are not, sorry if I am off base) Imagine you have a perfect husband at home who loves and cherishes you, and is home cooking you a romantic dinner. Think about him, and the boys won't make you nervous. :D
Good Luck, am interested to know how you make out.
