Agoraphobia & Social Anxiety Support Group
Agoraphobia is an anxiety disorder, often precipitated by the fear of having a panic attack in a setting from which there is no easy means of escape. As a result, sufferers of agoraphobia may avoid public and/or unfamiliar places. In severe cases, the sufferer may become confined to their home, experiencing difficulty traveling from this "safe place."

I was looking at this first page here and there's like 4 topics posted about making or keeping friends. I have this problem too. My wall has always been sky high and pretty much no one but certain family members can get through it. I know there are other people in this world who are not agoraphobic who probably don't have many friends themselves....yet....it doesn't bother them....or at least it doesn't turn in to some sort of anxiety disorder. Do you think that we put to much emphasis on friends? Do you think that we end up making things so much harder on ourselves...because we look at other people with their friends..having fun...and we feel we don't measure up...because we don't have the status quo of friendships? I wonder if this is a hinderance in overcoming anxiety/agoraphobia? Should we maybe put more effort into being our own friend than beating up on ourselves for our lack of friends. I don't have the answers to any of these questions but am just throwing them out there to mull over. I mean part of me has always enjoyed spending time by myself..I enjoy my own company.....then there's the odd time that I feel I need someone to talk to....but it's not that often. Then there's times.....and this is a big one.....where I find myself comparing myself to others.....seeing them doing all these things with their vast array of friends...while I sit doing nothing......the very nothing that I was fine with...until I witnessed or heard about others having so much fun....and then wondering...what is wrong with me....why am I not out doing anything? Why am I such a loner? I'm rambling. Anyway...I think having someone to talk to is a great thing...and I'm not knocking having friends at all....I just wonder if we put so much importance on it..that it affects our progress with this anxiety/agoraphobia mess. You know....just something else to beat ourselves up over?

Do you think anxiety is genetic or comes from your environment? What are your thoughts?

Many of you know Mr K told me to "shut your mouth" in March 2025 when we took a road trip to Alpena Michigan. Since that time, we have had lots of ups and downs but I have never intentionally hurt Mr K in anyway. And when we first started dating in 2024 he let me know, although he is an engineer by degree, he has an extremely low EQ. Overall, he is ok (not off the charts nice like other guys in...

But it REALLY bugs me when I go on Facebook or something and I see my brother, for example, who has tons of friends and is always doing something fun with them. I find myself wishing I could be like him, and wondering why I'm so damaged or inept that I haven't managed to achieve that.
I don't think we put too much emphasis on friends; everybody wants companionship SOMEtime, even us introverts and loners.
And we ARE bombarded by images and standards of friendship in the media. You turn on the TV and every commercial shows happy groups of friends ... you can't help but feel a little inadequate.
And yet ... I was asked to do something by a friend and I was looking forward to it. But when she told me she was bringing along her son and another person who I'd never met ... and we were going to dinner before this event ... it all became too much and I backed out. So much for me hanging out with a happy group of friends! :(
You all touched on it..the introvertedness.
It's harder to get close to people, not to mention it's hard to relax around people when you observe them from the sidelines and see how untrustworthy so many of them are.
Not all,some.
