Adoption Support Group
Adoption is the legal act of permanently placing a child with a parent or parents other than the birth parents. Whether you are looking to adopt, putting your child up for adoption, parenting an adopted child, or just thinking about it, this is the place to discuss.
I've had 2 really good friends adopt through the state foster care system. Both struggled with the legal aspects of the bio family as things aren't always finalized when you get a placement. However, both are extremely happy and have great families.
I would say do the training and eventually a child will come into your home that is a good fit for you and them. MT really focuses on the needs of the child and then the needs of the "parents" such as what they can provide. In MT they select families primarily based on the children and then what the family feels. Each person has deal breakers and before licensing, placement etc...you talk to your FRS about it and work with them.
2 families in my church have done this. The first is my preacher and his wife. They have 2 bio children and 5 adopted through foster care. When they set out they only wanted to foster but fell in love and ended up adopting.
The other family is like DH and I. Couldn't have their own children and set out to adopt one at a time. They got a call that a sibling group of 4 needed a home so they took them and were able to adopt all 4 at once. They have now gotten out of the system because they feel their family is complete.
Both couples dealt with the legal issues with bio parents but said it's worth it in the end. And if you lose a child, you know their life was better while they were with you.
Thank you so much for your response!
Adopting through foster care is a good idea and this way you can see if the children and you fit together well.
I would love to hear more stories from people who have done this. Thank you all for your replies! :-)
So I think the one thing to know that we were not told was that some of these kids have issues. I went into this very realistically, and I think that has helped keep me going. Deep down, he is such a loving kid, desperate for love and attention. That is what keeps me going.
I don't want to scare you. I just want you to know that sometimes these kids have issues.
What we learned since September is that in MT things are done on a point system and very often children who become eligible for adoption in FC get adopted by the foster familes vs. the placement and going through staffing.
Foster care is a great way to become familiar with the system and get some valuable experience so when there is a child available that you fit and vise versa, you have a better shot at a perm. placement.
We did the same as Kahlua but we're in CA. We foster/adopted siblings at 4 and 6 yrs old. The road to the actual adoption finalization seemed rough but now dealing with my dd's bi-polar, adhd, anxiety disorder and my son's ADD and ODD makes the process seem like a cakewalk.
We intentionally wanted older kids because they need the homes the most. Now I know why. Only take on what you can handle and get as much info you can on the child/ren.
