My question is if any one else's child has been restrained and developed Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or Anxiety due to being restrained???
My son is 6 and was diagnosed ADD last year. The 1st half of kindergarten was horrible, but the second half, after starting meds --was pretty smooth.
My son started seeing a therapist last year and attended their summer group. During the summer, his therapist used physical restraint on my son. She says she did so maybe 4 or 5 times.
My son has become very anxious and doesn't want to leave my side. He doesn't like a lot of noise or large groups of people. He won't talk at all to strangers. He started having fits when I would drop him off at summer group, and has even become anxious when I drop him off at his daycare. He has been going to daycare since he was 3 and has never had this kind of problem.
This week on the 1st day of 1st grade, his therapist had to take him to her room and hold onto him so I could leave. He never made it to class and later she used restraint on him. He ended up biting her and she accidentally jabbed him in the eye. She called me around 1:30pm wanting me to come pick him up. I could hear my son screaming bloody murder in the background.
The school told me that my son could not go back to school till this coming Monday because he can no longer be in a regular classroom due to his behavior issues. My son has never been violent with me or myHi all,

My son stays with my brother's family often as well as my best friend's family often, neither have ever seen such behavior. Even the daycare has never had a problem with my son's behavior.
My best friend and her husband are both RN's and they looked up the use of restraint on kids and suggested that he could have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I asked my son about being restrained and how they did it. I also asked him how it made him feel.
When the therapist 1st told me that thy use restraint, I didn't realize what a big deal it is. I now wish that I had pulled him out of summer group. I really believe that being restrained multiple times has been traumatic on him, nor do I believe that he should have been restrained in the 1st place.
Now, on Monday we are having a 504 meeting. When speaking to the principal on the phone, I detected an attitude in the tone of her voice. She and the therapist think that the anxiety is normal for ADD kids and that we're seeing it due to his impulses being controlled now that he's on meds.
However, at the time this started --I hadn't been giving him his meds. I hate seeing him all zoned out over the summer when he should be playing and the daycare said that he's not a problem for them when he's not on meds.
I plan to tell the school that I do not want him restrained again or secluded. I've read that kids have been injured and killed in the last few years, as restraint has become more popular. Almost all kids that have been restrained have an impairment or disability. Almost all kids that are restrained develop PTSD.
I also plan to look into getting a parent advocate. I was told that the school system will bend over backwards if you have one. We'll see what happens on Monday.

Definitely tell them you do not want your son to be restrained. Write a letter to the school board stating this and make sure it gets in his file. make sure the school knows you sent a copy to the board. You should also take your son to a pediatric psychologist that is not afiliated with the school and get a diagnosis. Make sure you sit down with your son and tell him how you feel about him being restrained and that you are sorry it happened and you won't let it happen again. you may have to take some responsibility here telling him you didn't know it was bad because he was in the care of professionals that you should be able to trust. This will help him feel more safe knowing you won;t allow it to happen again. Definitely bring an advocate with you to school and the best one will be a psychologist that has been working with your son. I brought my son's psychologist to school meetings a couple of times last year and they are more accomodating. Is changing schools an option for you? Something to think about. Hope you able to get the situation rectified!

I can't believe they restrained your son. they have no right to do that. It makes me very scared to think of what they may have done to him in camp for him to be so dramatically affected. You might think about reporting the camp to the authorities, see if anyone else has filed a complaint against them. Definately get a pediatric psychologist who can be trusted. Your pediatrician should have an excellent reccomendation. my heart goes out to you and your son
