First try with Adderall, it worked right away on day one. However, our son went into random rages as it wore off and we stopped it within a few days for that reason.

Flash forward a few years, we needed to try a different med and the psychiatrist suggested trying Adderall again. Reluctantly, we did. First day was a disaster because the dosage was too low. We bumped it up a lot the next day and it worked great. No rages, no side effects. Really happy with it.

Varies so much by each person, though. Adderall has the nickname Madderall, so the big side effect to watch for is the anger as it wears off.

I would not recommend Adderal because when I was on it, I gained 30 pounds in one year( guesstamate). Have you tried Ritalin LA?

my thanks to all of your for your replies. I did hear about the rages that kids can experience while on it..and I am terrified. I also wanted to know if anyone has experienced tics while on it.

I would recommend concerta...i am just trying vynanse now it is my first day, and it makes u sweat alot. I just wanted to see if anything was better than concerta. But I was taking 72mg of concert and 20 mg of ritalin. Concerta is good bc it is evenly distributed through the body throughout the day. Its a more mellow release of the medication, unlike the rapid release meds like regular ritalin or regular adderall. I had no side effects on it, maybe the occasional headache, and u cant take antacids, or pepto...but if i was going to give my child an add med, i would definatly consider a controlled release as my first option

I was put on Adderall 2 years ago because of a brain injury. I suffered a mildTBI/post concussion syndrome, and have many cognitive issues from it. My neurologist put me on the Adderall extended release, 20mg twice a day. At first I didn't even know that I was taking it-no side effects at all. Then one day, I realized that my concentration was a bit better, so she left me on it. I'm pretty sure that those with ADD/ADHD will have a more pronounced effect. My daughter, who is 27, was put on it when she started having concentration problems her last year in college. She says she can tell almost immediately that it is working. She has had no side effects either-didn't even gain weight, or have appetite problems. I did gain some weight, but I think that is mostly due to the fact that I can't do physical activity like I used to do, because of the balance and dizziness problems with my injury.

I don't have experience with the Adderall with a young child, so the reactions might be totally different than my daughter and me. I hope things go well with you and your son. God Bless. Kathy

My son started Ritalin, and our doctor told us that stimulants usually start working in about 45 minutes or so. So hopefully you'll see atleast a slight difference quickly. A child Psychiatrist told me that adderall is sometimes harder to tolerate than Ritalin, but I have also read that it can be more effective. It might be helpful to ask your son's doctor why Adderall is preferred as the first choice, or have you already tried ritalin?

Hi Erica. I am new here as well. I was recently diagnosed ADHD...at 52 mind you...and was put on Adderall XR 20 mg the first month. I noticed a difference immediately. In hindsight the best way I can describe the difference in how I feel is like this: The constant buzz in the back of my brain went away. I did have my doctor up the dose the second month to 25 mg and it seems to work for me perfectly. I have not noticed any side effects other than dry mouth and my blood pressure sometimes feels higher than normal...usually when I drink too much coffee. Overall, I give it an 8 on a 1-10 scale.
