Has anyone had their ADHD child tested for Central Auditory Disorder? I am beginning to think my son has been misdiagnosed and that his behaviors are linked to his learning disabilities since this nightmare didn't start until he was diagnosed in the 3rd grade. I have been on this website for several months and realized that most of you talk about your kids having ADHD symptoms as young as 2 or 3 years old. My son did not have these symptoms until 8 or 9 when he was told he had a learning disability in Language Arts. I contacted an advocate today and explained the situation to her and requested information on how to get him tested for LD. I want an outside of school opinion with thorough testing. The advocate said to get him tested for CAPD right away to either rule it out or see if it applies to him. She also said that CAPD is often misdiagnosed as ADHD and that children are born with ADHD and symptoms would arise at an early age. I googled it and I do see some similarities in the symptoms. I just wondered if anyone out there has had their child tested for this and what they may know about it.

One of my sons was tested and diagnosed for certain areas of CAPD, yet he is so clearly ADD, that diagnosis is irrefutable despite the other.

Yeah, since I posted this I have read a lot about it and even if diagnosed, there doesn't seem to be much to do about it. I may hold off on it as insurance doesn't cover it and it costs around $500 plus I would have to drive 3 hours one way. I meet with my son's therapist in an hour or so to discuss everything that's been going on and make a plan going forward. We'll see what he says. Thanks for responding.

I would love to hear more about what you have found. I am about 12 weeks into all this and my daughter's psych evaluations were disclosed to me today. He says that she is not ADHD. We have been referred to an auditory/speech therapist. Yes, it is $600 to test. The therapist has agreed to let me make it in two installments. Ironically, the pediatrician had mentioned sensory integration disorder before he referred us to the psychologist. He was certain it was ADHD, but felt strongly that she could have sensory issues. I'm wondering what happens from here. Do you have any pointers for me?

Sorry, I don't at this point. Since I have posted this, both the school and the therapist have said that they think my son has pretty much been tested to death and even if he is diagnosed with this it really wouldn't matter as there really isn't a treatment it would just be yet another diagnosis. We have been through a lot especially my son and I am going to give it a rest through Summer. Sorry it's not much help but if your daughter is up for more testing, have it done. I was referred to Teri Bellis at the University of South Dakota. They send out a pre-screening. It looks like the school resource teacher would fill it out...then you mail it in and the cost for them to review it to determine if your child needs to come there to be tested is $200. If they do not need to be tested, you do not get your $200 back, if they do, the $200 goes toward the cost of the test.
