Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), also known as acute myeloid leukemia, is a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells. Patients with AML usually present with symptoms such as fatigue, bleeding, infection, prompting medical attention. An abnormal blood test reading will then result in further testing in a hospital with a hematologist to determine AML.

What has AML taught you or changed in your life?

Dear all,

As I am approaching the end of my planned treatment (induction and 3 consolidation chemo rounds), I will go back to my "normal" life, after 4+ months that I basically spent hospitalized.

And these days, when side effects are better, and I am in isolation, I wonder what will change in my life after this (while always being aware that relapse can happen, and hoping it doesn't).

If I was dealt this unfortunate card, I feel like there are things I can learn and change in my life, in my priorities, the way I think, appreciate, interact, take care of myself, and probably more.

I would love to hear from you, what do you feel you have learned in and from your AML journey? What have you changed in your life? What do you feel has changed?

Abby2 -- glad to hear you got through it. This type of thing happened three times to me. In all cases I felt like I was not long for this world, but instead of worrying about it I said that I was going to throw it all on the Lord, as he commanded us in Matthew 6. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. With that I could relax and get some sleep. I would advise all to write your experiences down as best you can -- even if only notes, or perhaps e-mails. Then a year or so down the road when you get to feeling cocky again, pull it out and read it ... the experiences will do us no good if we forget them. Take care all -- dave

Sorry to hear about the setback. You're right. You get kicked right off your feet when these setbacks occur with no warning. I was so disappointed, so many times, to have to go back to the hospital because of an infection. Or worse yet, to be delayed in going home because of an infection. It's really a roller coaster ride, huh? One you don't want to take, for sure. Now, in a very weird way, I'm kind of always bracing for that "thing" to come along, but I have more faith that I'll be able to beat it. At least that is always my hope.
Take care and get stronger. I hear ya when you get that "oh man, I didn't see that comin' feeling."

It is hard when you are feeling up and then you get knocked down. I remember getting home from the hospital after transplant and just wanting to stay home. Unfortunately, after about a week and a half at home, I was having major problems and had to go back into the hospital for a week. I have been hospitalized 2 other times and each time, is a blow, but also something to get through and in the end helps you to get better. Keep up the positive attitude.
