Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), also known as acute myeloid leukemia, is a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells. Patients with AML usually present with symptoms such as fatigue, bleeding, infection, prompting medical attention. An abnormal blood test reading will then result in further testing in a hospital with a hematologist to determine AML.
Hi I want to thank you all for holding my hand over the past weeks through my husband's induction and the complications which came up during that process. He was released from the hospital about two weeks ago. His vision still isn't back all the way, so he is very frustrated with that, but all in all doing well. We met with his doctor yesterday and he believes that my husband is in remission and said he sees "excellent recovery of blood counts" they are going to do a bone marrow test in two weeks to confirm.
He stated that they are waiting for that confirmation and confirmation that his fungal lung infection has cleared up before moving on to the next phase. As I have learned with AML if there is no further treatment after remission it will most likely come back. Our insurance has approved a BMT and that is the course of action it looks like his doctor is leaning towards, he said we would discuss all the pros an cons with the transplant team, but they are having my husband sisters tested right away so my gut feeling is that is the option he is leaning toward advising us on. My husband is 48 and other than this has always been in excellent heath, but this still scares me.
I am just going to trust his doctor, I know he is in good hands. His doctor is very highly regarded and so far they have done everything to see my husband through this as all of you have done for me. I can't thank you enough for your continued support and advice. I hope some day to be just has helpful to others.

Get him to build up his strength as much as possible during this down time, keep on walking everyday. In the breaks between induction and consolidaition its important to try and build up as much strength so that you go back into the next round as best as possible.
Try and keep the low bacteria diet and keep away from people as much as possible still :) We found this worked for the best outcome

I am so happy to hear your husband's recovery is going well. Counts coming back is a wonderful indicator!! I am no FLT3 expert; however, we are blessed to have many on this site, but it seems transplant is the optimal path. As many have posted, just in the past few months many advances have been made. I am the same age as your husband (diagnosed in March of this year) and have three daughters, 8, 11 and 12.
I'm praying for continued good progress.

Things sound great and that is how you must look at every good piece of news. Do not look over your shoulder, just straight ahead. Don't worry excessively about your husband getting a transplant. I am significantly older than he, and the transplant preparation and actual procedure went without a hitch. As you know, I will get a bone marrow biopsy on Oct 1 after almost 25 months of doing well. I expect to continue on the path of good health. Rejoice in every positive thing.

I was 48 at diagnosis and transplant. I am, as you know, flt3 positive. I am doing fine. Always a speed bump, but moving forward.
It seems a bunch of us are having BMB in two weeks. I am also scheduled the week of Oct 1, though likely on the 3 or 4. I wants my counts as close to normal as possible, so there is little chance of them picking up immature white cells, whereby questioning anything.
In terms of the BMT, cross that bridge when you get there.
