Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) Support Group
Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), also known as acute myeloid leukemia, is a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells. Patients with AML usually present with symptoms such as fatigue, bleeding, infection, prompting medical attention. An abnormal blood test reading will then result in further testing in a hospital with a hematologist to determine AML.
I have been a lurker on this board for the last 6 months. Even though I haven't posted before I have found this board inspirational and informative (I'm sure there are many other lurkers out there who feel the same). My 39 year old husband was diagnosed with monocytic aml in august 2012. He underwent induction and 4 rounds of consolidation and ended his treatment in Jan. He is normal karyotype npm1 + and flt3 -. This has put him in the best prognosis category (whatever that really means). My question is about his latest blood differential-his monocyte percentage went from 8.3 (march) 10.7 H (april) 13.1 H (may). His actual monocyte count has remained the same at .5 for all 3 months. The oncologist doesn't seem worried and actually said he didn't need another blood test until July. She said his blood looked great. I'm freaked out though-mainly because it is the monocytes that are high-that is what the problem was to begin with. His neutrophil count has decreased each month too (although still in the normal range) could this be why the monocyte percentage has changed-without the actual count changing????? Everything else is normal besides platelets a little low (157). Thanks for any advise you can give.

I didn't know you were having trouble with your liver enzymes. I am glad they straightened out. I wasn't sent home on any antifungals, so my LFTs have been good all along. Inflammation of the liver from any cause makes you so tired, so your stamina should be increasing now that this problem is out of the way. I hope you have been eating well and exercising.

Eddie's advice is perfect. Do not let the team leave your room until every question is answered to your satisfaction. If there is NO answer to a question, then you have to be told that. Otherwise, you deserve to be informed. That doesn't mean that you will even want to know the answer to certain questions, especially when they involve speculation about what might or might not happen. It just leads to anxiety and doesn't get you anywhere.
