Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), also known as acute myeloid leukemia, is a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells. Patients with AML usually present with symptoms such as fatigue, bleeding, infection, prompting medical attention. An abnormal blood test reading will then result in further testing in a hospital with a hematologist to determine AML.

seeking opinions/experiences with BMT.

As some of you know, we are preparing for a BMT for my three year old son who has relapsed. We are set up for a consult with university of Minnesota pediatric transplant unit. This was decided based on location. My question is...how have others decided where BMT would be performed? Is it worthwhile to seek additional opinions or would that just delay the process unnecessarily?

I'm sure you'll get helpful replies from those with first-hand experience, but I just wanted to pass on this resource that I saw online. It has advice for choosing which hospital to get the BMT at, and has a link to a directory of hospitals that do BMTs, along with some good statistics and phone numbers of all the staff members. The number of BMTs performed per year broken down by type and pediatric vs adult are given.

Thank you so much! I am feeling really good about U of M after looking at that site! They have performed far more cord blood transplants than anyone else, and they have performed more pediatric BMTs than many other centers!

The group definitely has experience. Their website says that they "house the largest pediatric BMT program in the nation" (not sure how they define largest, but sounds reassuring to me). Their BMT doctors have emails on their profiles; you could try emailing a doctor with questions. http://www.bmt.umn.edu/meet-our-experienced-team

I read a story about a little boy that got a double cord transplant there when he was 3 years old and he is doing great 8 years later! Sounds like a great place to get Julian healthy.
