Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) Support Group

Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), also known as acute myeloid leukemia, is a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells. Patients with AML usually present with symptoms such as fatigue, bleeding, infection, prompting medical attention. An abnormal blood test reading will then result in further testing in a hospital with a hematologist to determine AML.

Well Jo was into what we hoped would be her last 6 months of chemo but she has now broken out with shingles. She had just finished her last round of chemo so her white count is really low. They let her try one night at home on pain meds and antibiotics but she is now headed back to the doctor because it is worse and hurts worse. She will probably be admitted to the hospital so that they can hopefully get this under control. Please pray that they can do this quickly. My poor sister has been through so much so far and still, if it can happen, it will happen to her. The docs tell her all the time she is the most unusual patient, treatment wise, that they have run across. Her body just seems to do the things the docs say happen very rarely. She will ask them sometimes, "Is that unusual" and they will say, not for you. Please pray that she can kick these shingles quickly and get some relief from the pain.

Dearest Debbie,

Your precious sister, Jo had endured so much. I have never heard of sweets syndrome. How devastating. I'm praying with Karen that all tests will be negative. Please keep us posted.

We got Jo's final report on her chromosome analysis this morning and there were NO abnormalities this time. She would usually show about 4 abnormal chromosomes out of 20 so they said she still had residule disease in her chromosomes. NONE this time! Yay! Now we just have to hope the other test show no cancer elsewhere. She has a mammogram on the 22nd and then a colonoscopy and pap smear. Praying all come back normal! If all comes back normal, then no more chemo and we hope what she has done already has done the trick finally!

Thanks Julie, the rash "Sweet's Syndrome" keeps returning and it is painful like shingles when she gets it so she is still battling that but it was a huge relief to know it was not a relapse in her AML. Since Sweet's is indicative of cancer elsewhere or relapse we were really worried about AML relapse. Hopefully all other tests will show negative also. She had already decided that she was doing no more chemo for the AML so I'm glad the biopsy came back ok. I thought I was going to have to tie her up and bring her back for her next round of chemo. The docs have not actually told her she can quit but hopefully with a clean biopsy they will let her do it. Thanks for always being a strong support!

Well, Jo has had all the other tests for cancer in other places in her body and they have found none! We are so happy! Her last bone marrow biopsy also showed no diseases all the way to her chromosomes for the the first time ever. She is still battling the painful rash that comes back every time they stop the meds for it but in the grand scheme of things I guess it is a small hurdle. They are finally allowing her to stop chemo after 3 long years. I have to thank God and pray that the remission holds. I guess the worrying never ends but I am so thankful that she has made it to this goal! Today she got to ring the bell!!

I hope you sister is doing well. I remember when you ask me about the sg-110 trial in MDA Houston. I know she is having the best treatment in the USA and Also I know God is with you and your sister. My mom now is almost 3 years in the battle and we had ups and downs but never loss hope. In September during vacations to Mexico City she had a pneumonia and complications only one week for the second birthday for the stem cell transplant she received in MDA. She was admit in to a local government facility as Emergency and the doctors told us she was not going to survive more of 24 hours or less. When she was moved from the intense care unit to a room in the cancer area one of the doctor tell me that after years of practicing medicine in the Intense care units some time she see things that they can only call miracles and for her my mom was one of them. Now she is in full recovery and doing a lot better she is still in Mexico for the vacations. God is good
