Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), also known as acute myeloid leukemia, is a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells. Patients with AML usually present with symptoms such as fatigue, bleeding, infection, prompting medical attention. An abnormal blood test reading will then result in further testing in a hospital with a hematologist to determine AML.

My sister is being admitted to the hospital today with some type of infection. She just finished her 5 days of chemo last week so her WBC is .3 which has us scared. They are checking her for pneumonia. If it is pneumonia, it happened really fast because she was doing good Saturday. Hoping and praying it is a small infection because she doesn't have much to fight it with.

Jo is still in the hospital. It was determined it was not Cdiff. They really have not determined what it actually was. They will not let her come home until her WBC is 1 and it is still just .4. It went up to .6 and they thought she might get to come home today but this morning it was back down to .4, They seem to be thinking now that all this was caused by the new chemo. Seems strange that it was would cause all of this when the more intensive chemo did not. We don't' know what it will mean for her treatment if it was because Dr. Bothakur still says he doesn't think she has had enough chemo to keep the AML from returning but my sister says she cannot go through this every round of this new chemo.

Hoping she gets to come home soon. I am sick with a cold and they will not let anyone visit who is ill so I have not been able to visit her at all during her stay. I did slip in for just a few minutes yesterday for Thanksgiving but as I am still coughing, could not stay long and cannot go back until cough is gone.

Hope everyone else had a great Thanksgiving and is doing well.

Debbie -- it was a tough Thanksgiving that you will never forget, but hopefully will never have to repeat. I am so thankful that it was not c-diff -- I would have expect they would have quarantined her if it was. Jo just needs to keep the faith at this point and anything you can do to help her get through it -- perhaps a call if you cannot visit -- will be of great value. It is just a matter of time for her bone marrow to generate the good blood cells -- but it could take another week or more so it is most important to get her to just hang in and not get down. Take care of yourself -- you do not need to take any chances with the cold. We are praying for you and Jo. Take care -- dave

I'm so sorry to hear Jo is still in the hospital; however, I'm glad she is getting the care she needs at this time. As I've shared below, toward the end of my consolidation treatments, I would remain neutrapedic until day 30+ even with a lowered chemo dose. Please remember the effects of chemo can be cumulative.

I appreciate the Jo's doctor is aggressive and wants to give her all she can tolerate but many have beat aml with less chemo. I had the same slow recovery like jo but I had no adverse reactions. I wanted more chemo but my med team went with the four consolidation standard.

I just don't want you to worry that she may not have had enough. Good is in control and jo has endured so much. I'm praying that her body begins to heal.
