Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) Support Group

Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), also known as acute myeloid leukemia, is a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells. Patients with AML usually present with symptoms such as fatigue, bleeding, infection, prompting medical attention. An abnormal blood test reading will then result in further testing in a hospital with a hematologist to determine AML.

To all those who have received or are receiving transplants this month,

Today is my 3rd birthday. I am so thankful to have made it this long in good health (actually I am lying...I have a cold). I am posting this AM just to let you know that all those months of enduring treatment after treatment is worth it. BMTs DO WORK and a return to good health and normalcy is right around the corner.

Like all good three year olds, I would like to stick out my tongue at AML.

Love it! My 3-year-old will soon turn zero! My husband laughed at treating it like a birthday. Is it true that the BMT will change his DNA? Either way...it's a major undertaking! So glad you are doing well. The inspiration on this board is phenomenal!

jacki, it is true that his marrow and blood will take on the dna of the donor. but everything else will remain (organs, skin, etc) will remain his own. It is what they call a chimera. All of us that have received transplants are Chimeras'. I guess this can also occur naturally in rare cases, like people with two different eye colors.

Congrats on your 3 year birthday Cliff! It's nice to read posts from people who are finished with all the treatments and are doing well and have returned to a normal life. I tell my sister this all the time and try to keep these thoughts front and center for her. You, Dave, DaveJ, you are all great for morale!

Thanks again, everyone. It is my hope that all of you will find yourselves at the end of the tunnel very soon. The light is absolutely blinding. After so many months of living in the dark, always wondering (and worrying) what snag awaits just around the corner, the path finally straightens out, the dark corners disappear, and you can once again see a life in front of you.
