Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) Support Group
Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), also known as acute myeloid leukemia, is a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells. Patients with AML usually present with symptoms such as fatigue, bleeding, infection, prompting medical attention. An abnormal blood test reading will then result in further testing in a hospital with a hematologist to determine AML.
This is day 28 and Keir is getting discharged. I am so relieved for all of us that he can go - well, not home as our house has mold from a flooded basement and is being torn up to fix that issue before he comes in to it, but to my parents' house nearby. Since I do caregiving for them, this will consolidate things for me a bit.
Keir's FLT3 status got somewhat more detailed as the doctor explained he is not positive for "ITB" but rather "TDK" . The doctor tried to explain what this meant, but all I can - without my notes - really remember is that this makes the next step a bit less certain and we need to look at things before deciding as opposed to being absolutely sure about going straight to bmt. However, that process will begin somewhat, with my daughter being tested and so forth. Otherwise, Keir is doing well, the c-diff is not a problem and seems to have resolved, and he feels good. He was fortunate in so many ways, I know.
Again, I want to thank you all more than I have words to express. This road is just starting for us, and those of you further along down it left it well lit and rescued us every time shadows became terrifying. May each of you be blessed with excellent outcomes and joy, you are and will remain in my prayers. I will be online of course and will be checking in to see how you are all doing and with - I truly hope - less frantic questions in the future. Keir has a clinic appointment on Monday and then another bmb on Friday, I think.

Clinic visit is Monday. And then on Friday, another bone marrow biopsy, which is, of course, anxiety producing. It is a sunny day today and very fall like here and Keir is hoping to get out for a walk on the sidewalk. We are trying not to think too far ahead just now, as so many of you have suggested. I am keeping all of you in my prayers. I know some of you are in hospital now and some are going to be soon and please know that you will be in my prayers many times a day.
I am not surprised that Keir is having menu problems. For quite a while, all I could eat were eggs, grapefruit and seltzer. Gradually things get better. You should encourage Keir to eat WHATEVER is palatable. If he wants to eat the most greasy, unhealthy etc., foods on earth, that is fine until his normal appetite and sense of taste return. He needs protein and calories.
Please never consider your questions FRANTIC. We are all frantic to some degree about our disease and reassurance is so soothing.
I am thrilled about how Keir is doing!

I also agree with Dave, just remember you are home, but there is always going to be at least 2 more sessions to get through. Therefore get him to bring up his strength to tackle the next round. Keep him away from shops and people in general, walk around the block but don't go to the gym.... keep up the low bacteria diet :)
It all helps to keep those infections away
