Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), also known as acute myeloid leukemia, is a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells. Patients with AML usually present with symptoms such as fatigue, bleeding, infection, prompting medical attention. An abnormal blood test reading will then result in further testing in a hospital with a hematologist to determine AML.

Dual FLT3 Mutation

My 18yr old son was diagnosed with AML on 5/24/15, just one week after graduating high school. Over the course of the last 8 weeks, his diagnosis has expanded to: AML M2 with FLT3 ITD and TKD, and NPM1, normal cytogenetics. When he was admitted his WBC was 78,000 and 80% blasts. He has gone through one round of induction chemo and his first consolidation chemo. He is going to have a bone marrow (or SCT) transplant, hopefully in Oct/Nov. I have been doing research and only 1-2% of AML cases present with dual FLT3 mutations, so statistically speaking, we have nothing to go by. There are very few cases like my son's. Needless to say, I am beyond scared, but I manage to keep it together around him. In private, or at work, is where I am able to break down. I know we have a long hard road ahead of us, but we are taking it one day at a time and making his days count. Thanks for having us.

As always you are spot on. There are several here who had the flt 3 tdk mutation who are chemo only, Julie s husband Vince, ameasch, and cajun girls sister Jo to name a few.

Lou, independently, you are right about the mutations. But the concern is, they don't know how they will interact together. Time will tell. Right now, he is doing well and that is what we hold on to.

Momma -- it is heartbreaking reading your story, and we are all praying for JT and your family. Care giving can be worse than being a patient -- I have been on both sides, but am now a 5.5 year AML survivor -- chemo only so cannot comment on transplant, but one advantage JT has over me is his age -- I am now 72. The forum is the best and easiet to ues that I have found. Let the doctors on the team know that you are doing research and what you have found -- if they are good they will appreciate it. Preface your comments with: "I have found a lot of junk on the Internet, but this particular article seemed promising ..." or something like that so they know you are not second guessing them. If you give them the URL they will check it out and let you know. I would never go against my med team, but in this day and age patient participation is encouraged in many quarters. You have lots of friends here that want to help as well. Please take care of yourself -- we are praying ... and crying ... for you. -- daveB

Your son is more than welcome to contact me when he feels comfortable in doing so. I finished my AML treatments last year and was 23 at the time of diagnosis, so we have a close age in common.
