Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) Support Group
Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), also known as acute myeloid leukemia, is a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells. Patients with AML usually present with symptoms such as fatigue, bleeding, infection, prompting medical attention. An abnormal blood test reading will then result in further testing in a hospital with a hematologist to determine AML.

Let me first say that I am not a doctor, nor an I am giving any medical advice. I am a daughter who loves her father very much and we, as a team, are doing everything we can to help my dad get through this.
Another member here suggested I start this thread as we have been corresponding through email for months and he thought we should share all of our knowledge and experiences so that others may benefit from it if there is any benefit to be had.
First background- then I will tell you want alternative treatments he is trying....
Dad is 70 years old (he just had his 70th birthday :-)
He was diagnosed with AML M0 on April 7, 2011. We brought him to Dana Farber the very next day where we were told the risks, etc. and he began induction within 2 days. At that point he had 88% blasts.
He flew into remission after induction and we were thrilled. Although he had a number of complications during that time, the team was amazing there and he made it through and went home. Unfortunately he became extremely dehydrated from lack of drinking water and was back in the hospital within 5 days in acute kidney failure. They fixed that too, but again he had a number of complications and was almost unable to go through consolidation.
We whipped him into shape and he finally got consolidation. He again ended up with complications: confusion, high fevers, infection, etc., but he again made it through. On our last day in Boston(we were to go home that afternoon) he had blood work and saw the doc. His counts seemed funny. They did a BM biopsy just to check what was going on.
The next week our worst fears were realized. Dad has relapsed. We couldn't believe it. We were devastated. (all this- for 4 months- for nothing we thought). He was 5 weeks out of consolidation.
He was given 4 choices: induction again, palliative care (which is lose-dose chemo for 1 hr. for 5 days on and then 28 days off and repeat, a clinical trial, or nothing in which case we would call hospice and he would die.)
Dad did not want to go through induction again- it was hard on him. He didn't want a trial because that meant months away from home again. He choose the low-dose chemo at home in NY.
The choices were given to him on 7/27/11 and they said he could wait until after his birthday party 8/7 to start the chemo. He was given anywhere from a few weeks to a few months to live.
Here comes the alternative part ......... while we were sitting on the porch on 7/31/11 a neighbor stopped by to see dad. This neighbor has multiple myeloma. He was given 2 years to live. That was 5 years ago. When he was diagnosed, he did not want to do chemo. He went MD Anderson where he was enrolled in a clinical trial. The trial was for 1 year and was given 8000mg of curcumin a day. When the trial was over he was not cured, but his cancer did not progress. He was at 30% when he went to MD Anderson and that is where he is today. He never stopped taking the curcumin. He says he can tired easily because his counts have stayed low, but that in general he feels fine. That was all dad needed to hear. He wanted to try it.
Dad asked for a list of everything the neighbor was doing. He obliged.
He takes:
1.) 8000mg of curcumin a day (4000 in the morning and 4000 a night). Super Curcumin w/Bioperine Time Release 1000mg-60 Tabs
Here is the website:
http://www.agelesscures.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=3&products_id=1
We bought another brand (1000 mg with bioperine) to get us by at first from a local health food store, but ordered this one since it is the same curcumin he used in his clinical trial at MD Anderson.
2.) Silver : specifically Sovereign Silver (immune system booster)
Here is the website:
http://www.natural-immunogenics.com/
We bought it in a local health food store though
3.) Ojibwa Tea Liquid 16 oz (473 ml) by NOW -
Here is a website: http://www.betterhealthinternational.com/productDetails.asp?prodID=N4855&utm_source=googlebase&utm_medium=comparsionshopping&CAWELAID=556908777&gclid=CNe7q6GwxaoCFQfBKgodBUU8zg
We also got another version from the health food store (Essiac tea concentrate), but we also ordered this version as it is the one our neighbor takes
In addition to what the neighbor has taken for the past 5 years for his multiple myeloma, I have done research and saw some promise for other therapies for AML.
I found that Japan has done a number of clinical trials for AML using high dose vitamin D3 and high doses vitamin K2. There are different kinds of K2 out there, but Japan uses K2 M-4 (Not the K2 M-7 that we see on every vitamin shelf in the USA) It was a tough time to find K2 M-4 for sale in the US, but I finally did.
Here is the website: http://www.nbihealth.com/p-10-osteo-k.aspx
Dad has asked that we throw everything but the kitchen sink at this (AML). His current chemo doctor told us that he can not condone him taking the supplements, because he has no idea if they will #1. Have any kind of interaction with the chemo and #2. if they will cause the chemo not to work (ie. the supplements and chemo could cancel eachother out).
Dad said he didn't care and that he wants to take it all at the same time. SO- dad has become his own guinea pig.
Here is what dad is taking:
(chemo) - dacogen -- just started 8/8/11 - 1 hr a day for 5 days- then that same regiment is repeated every 28 days)
Supplements:
Totals: (a day) - dad started the supplements on 7/31/11 -
His red and white stayed level at that time, but his platelets went up. He has not needed blood or platelet transfusions since he started the supplements- (blood draws only gave us results from 10 days he had on supplements alone before he started the chemo)- He was getting them (transfusions) every 2 days prior to starting them though.
8000 mg of Super Curcumin w/Bioperine Time Release 1000mg tabs- so 8 pills total for the day
1 teaspoon of Silver
2 tablespoon of Ojibwa Tea Liquid
6 tabs of Osteo-K( 3 with breakfast and 3 with dinner)
4 tabs of 1000mg D3 (so he ends up with 6000mg total for day between straight D3 tabs and what is in the Osteo-K)
How he does it:
Morning: 4000mg of curcumin (IMPORTANT- he can not have food or drink 1 hour before and up to 1 hour after so there is maximum absorption into his blood-according to the neighbor)
-- 1 hour later he takes the rest of his morning pills (other meds for other things- thyroid, etc) and he takes 3 tabs of the osteo-K which has K2 M-4, calcium and D3 in it.
-- He takes an additional 2 tabs of 1000mg of vitamin D3 so we can get higher does of D3(Osteo-K must be taken with food)
Before Lunch:
-- 1 teaspoon of Silver (hold under the tongue for 30 seconds then swallow) - once a day
-- 2 tablespoon of Ojibwa Tea Liquid (swallow once a day)
Dinner: he takes
-- 3 tabs of the osteo-K which has K2 M-4, calcium and D3 in it.
--- He takes an additional 2 1000mg of vitamin D3 (Osteo-K must be taken with food)
--- 1 hour after dinner he has 4000mg of curcumin- he waits an hour- takes his night pills and heads to bed.
SO - he is taking all of these supplements AND the low-dose chemo together at the same time.
I have seen trials with curcumin alone, trials with curcumin with D3, trials with D3 alone, trials with K2 M-4 alone and trials with K2 M-4 and D3 together, but never one with using them all. We have no idea what will happen, but we have high hopes. We have not been able to find a doctor who knows about this or is willing to give the thumbs up as they say they have no knowledge on the subject. MD Anderson has a whole group that deals with supplements and alternative therapies as well as trials, but dad does not want to go to Houston. So here we are trying it ourselves.
I will keep you posted on progress. Dad said if it isn't working - since we will have no way of knowing if chemo or the supplements are not working- we will adjust as we go. If he does well- he will stay on this regiment.
From what I have read- curcumin has killed cancer cells in vitrio and in viro. K2 M-4 and D3 have also done that. They said that they have studies K2 M-4 in vitro and seen some leukemia cells mature into normal cells. Of course these are all trials and the docs here and the FDA will not approve things without tons of research. I welcome people to do their own research and also let me know of there are any other alternatives out there that they have either tried or have heard about. Like I said- we have no way of knowing if this will help, but we will keep you informed on dad's progress.

now that mydad has developed tubercolosis, they refused to give him any chemo (supposed to be his 2nd round) as they're afraid that the Tubercolosis will spread when he is in low immune. they also refused to do biopsy to check the blast %. the medicine for tubercolosis needs 6months to be taken. until then, we have nothing. only blood transfusion and blood check up.
so far my dad's rbc and platelet are low, his wbc coping up quite well. i've given him osteo-k for 4days now, i'll let u guys know the results from the previous blood check before he started taking osteo-k. as far as today, he is feeling quite well, he started to drive and cook as well. he is very high-spirited to live, its just that he is quite phobia of IV needle. its cute.
i'll update again soon. take care all -- mimi
Good luck to your Dad. One never knows! He sounds very stable and hopefully he will clear the TB quickly.
Thinking of you,
Cliff
I am so heartened to rad your story about your Father. My husband is 78, dianosed with AML on May 16, 2012. He has been taking Decitabine alternatly with Sapacitabine (a trial drug). he has finished 2 rounds, and now is so weak and not feeling good at all. He is so discouraged, even tho his blasts went for 90% to 23%. . I would like to know how your Dade is handling the Decitabine? We are thinking of alternative ways to fight this disease and I want so much to hear that you have been successful with curcumin. Is it a vitamin or a medicine.? I will do some research on it. Good luck to you Father. I hope he beats it.
Gail
I wanted to share dad's newest counts with you.
WBC- 11
RBC- 3.11
Hemo- 11.2
Platelets- 147
I happy to say that it has been over 14 months since dad was sent home with the options of palliative care or hospice. Both of those options were to give us anywhere from another 3 weeks to 2-3 months more with dad. Over 14 months later dad is still here and continues to do well. :-)
Gail- dad stopped all chemo (decitabine) on Sept 16, 2011. Prior to that he had one round of 7/3 induction and one round of 5/2 consolidation. He relapsed 5 weeks after his 5/2 round of consolidation. They sent us home, basically for dad to die. They offered us decitabine to keep the AML at bay until ultimately it took his life. We opted to stop the decitabine after only 2 rounds and continue with the supplements and vitamins alone. His counts were taking longer and longer to recover after the chemo, so we just stopped.
He began taking the supplements and vitamins toward the end of July 2011 and the beginning of Aug. of 2011. He took them every day and continued to take them during the 2 rounds of decitabine he had.
After the 2nd round, when we decided to stop all chemo, he continued to take the supplements and vitamins. He continues to take them still today.
Of all of the supplements and vitamins he takes. I feel the most important are:
1.) 90mgs of MK4 (also called vitamin K2M4) - 45 mgs in the morning and 45 mgs at night
2.) at total of 10,000 mgs of vitamin D3 for the day- split morning and night
3.) 8,000 mgs of super curcumin with bioperine - 4000 in the morning and 4000 at night
It seems like people who just did the MK4 alone or just some of the D3 or just curcumin have not done as well as dad or others folks who did them all at the same dose level. The unfortunate thing is, every patient is different. I am not a doctor either, it's just something i noticed.
Dad tolerates everything well. He is used to his schedule of the vitamins. His last visit to the onc. was on 9/24. The doctor told him he is doing amazingly well and that he'd see in 4-5 weeks.
He also has not had a red blood cell transfusion since the day after Thanksgiving in 2011.
I hope this helps.
All my best,
Heather
That is truly amazing, and a good attitude goes very far in maintaining one's health.
Cliff
First, I join with others in welcoming those people who have recently joined this site. As you have found out, the people here are caring and supportive and a source of helpful information.
Second, a techinical problem. I used to get a daily email from Daily Strength at about 5:30 AM PT each day. For a while, I also received an emial whenever someone posted a reply. Now I get nothing and have to go to the site through the web to follow what is going on. Does anyone know what I should do to get the types of emails I was formerly receiving from the site?
I am posting this reply under this thread because Dave wanted periodic updates on peoples' experience with Heather's regimen and various versions of it, although it could be posted under other threads as well.
My Profile:
Age: 76
Date of Diagnosis: January 2012
Treatment: 7:3 Induction followed by two rounds of Consolidation. The last round concluded on about 6/15.
Planned future treatment: none.
I had a BMB last month. In the words of my dr in response to my email asking what the biopsy showed, "The bone marrow was fine. No lukemia was seen." The report itself said "No excess blasts." As I understand, blasts are immature white blood cells. Everyone has them; otherwise, they would never have mature white blood cells.
My blood counts were all low--not as good as those of Heather's dad. The dr said the counts were lower than last month's but higher than two months ago and that he was not concerned.
I am taking lower doses of the vitamins Heather's dad is taking because I have not had a relapse and I hope that the lower doses will help to fend off a relapse. I am prepared to go full throttle with Heather's regimen if I relapse. I am currently taking 500 mg of Ultra Curcumin C3 Complex with Bioprene in the morning on an empty stomach and 22.5 mg of K2M4 and 1000 IU of D-3 with breakfast I try to do the same around dinner but often miss. It is rare I have an empty stomach in the day. It seems that I will have to double my ccurcumin to be in the same ratio as Heather. I am feeling well and doing much of what I did before dx, although not as fast.
Last week when I was talking with my dr about blasts, he said I should attend the class he teaches in the medical school on the following Monday from 8-10 AM. He said there would be another patient there. The dr obviously knows are great deal and lectured at a fast pace throuought the class period (except for a 5 minute break). The last hour was about ALL and AML. With about ten minutes remaining, he asked me and the other person, a 38-year-old male who had been diagnosed with ALL at age 31, to come forward and tell about our situations and answer any questions the class might have. It was an interestng experience.
By the way, three of us in the group--Dave, Cliff and I--each has a son named Jonathan. Each of us has commented about what a great support the son has been to him.
Best to all of you.
Joanthan
thanks, Gail
We did a video a few months back so people could see dad and hear some of his story. (We shot it pretty late at night so he was a bit tired. We had a long weekend of fun and parties, so we were out of time to get it filmed. We just did it because I had to leave the next morning and we felt it was important.)
The video can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4NVrmUqw-8
He is even better today. We plan on doing a video update in a month or two when I can get home to see him again.
He still takes his vitamins (Osteo-K, D3, and Curcumin every day)
Best,
Heather
I too am being treated at UCLA and am only two years younger than your husband. I was diagnossed last January, about five months earlier than your husband. I have had a 7:3 induction and two rounds of consolidation. I do not recall being told I was receiving a trial drug but will check when I see the doctor next Wednesday. I am probably a little farther along in dealing wth the illness and treatmeni than your husband but not far enough to be definitive, especially since AML comes in different varieties and depends on the site of the irregularity in the cells.
I would be happy to compare experiences with you or your husband in person or by telephone. If you live in OC, I may have talked with your husband last May or June when I called a UCLA patient at the request of the nurse practioner. I recall that the person I spoke with was very complimentary of his wife and said that he did not know how a person could get through the chemo without a good wife. I was going to call back after I had completed my consolidation but lost the telephone number. If you would like to talk, call Karolina and ask her to give me your number and I will call.
If you live in Southern California, I would be happy to drive to your area to meet. I can probably get my wife to accompany me so you and she could share secrets about coping and caregiving. We could also met on your next trip to UCLA. We live about ten minutes from the campus. We could meet in the cafeteria between the 100 and 200 Buildings or some place in Westwood.
Even though I seem to be doing well, I am trying to follow a low dose of Heather's regimen.
I have found that regular, longish brisk walks are helpful. They cause the blood to circulate throughout the body, including the brain. They build strength and cardiovascular capacity and combat depression and other ailments.
I do not like to walk on sidewalks--too narrow and uneven and one has to slow down when he encounter some else on the sidewlk. I prefer to walk in a park, at a high school or college track, or in a street where there are other walkers and little traffic..Some people walk in malls before the shops open. I prefer to walk where there are other walkers and one can engage in some motivating one-way competion. One can make walking less monotonous by listening to music, news, or books on tape. It can be helpful to have a companion.
Best to you and your husband. Let me know if you feel I can be of help.
Jonathan
I need some help in confirming the dosages your father is taking and verifying that I am taking the proper products and in the right amounts.
I am taking vitamin K in an NBI pill from a bottle labelled Osteo-K. The listed ingredients are: 22.5 Mg of Vitamin K2 as K2, menaquinone, MK4; 1,000 IU of Vitamin D3; and 500 Mg of Calcium (citrate).
You state your Dad if taking 90mgs of MK4--3 tabs in the morning and 3 tabs with dinner. The math leads me to believe each tablet your father takes contains 15 Mgs (90/6) of Vitamin K. Since my tablets contain 22.5 Mgs of Vitamin K, I wonder if I am taking the right product. If I am taking the proper product, I can match your father's dosage by simply taking two of my 22.5 Mg tablets in the morning and two at night.
The curcimin I take comes from Ageless Cures in a bottle labelled Ultra Curcumin C3 Complex with Bioprene. The listed ingredients are: CurcuminC3 Complex, 500 mg and Bioprene, 3 mg. It appears your Dad's curcumin comes in tablets with 1,000 mg of curcumin since he takes 8,000 mg in 8 pills, If my curcumin is the same as yours, I can match your Dad's dosage by taking two of my pills for every one of his.
I have no questions about the Vitamin D3.
For your information, today I gave a copy of the 2009 article on Vitamin K2 in the Alternative Medicine Review, with the portions on osteoporosis highlighted, to my internist/gerontologist. She is young--about two years out of her residency. She expressed interest and thanked me for the article. She said that Vitamin K is a coagulant; I replied that the issue is discussed in the article. Next week, I shall give the article, with the Cancer section highlighted, to my oncologist. I do not expect the same level of interest but will let you know what he says, if anything.
Thanks for your help. Your are the prime example of a great and resourceful care provider for us all. I and other always enjoy reading about how your father is doing and appreciate immensely your information on his regimen. Bless you both.
Sincerely,
Jonathan
Yesterday I gave my oncologist a copy of the article on Vitamin K in the Alternative Medicine Review. When I told him I was taking Vitamin K, he asked, "Why would you do that?" I read him the part of the article that said Vitamin K "was found to induce apoptoses in 90 percent of lukemic blast cells." He said, "That sounds good."
We talked about other things, some not related to my case. As I got ready to leave, he said, "You were going to give a copy of the article." I had said I had an article for him but had forgotten to give it to him. When I gave it to him, he said he liked to keep up on what was "going on out there." I will follow up by sending a copy of your most recent post with an explanation about why your Dad is taking curcumin and reference MD Anderson. "Anderson" seems to get the attention of people in the field. I will also let you know what he says about Vitamin K etc. during our appointment next month.
I think I went part of the way to understanding your father's regimen when I realized that the dosage (22.5 Mg of K2) on the label of the Osteo-K bottle is for 3 tablets, not just one. I still don't see how your father gets to 10,000 units of D-3. He will get 4,000 with the six tablets of Osteo-K he takes both morning and night (total of 12 tablets) and another 4,000 with two pills of 1,000 both morning and night.
I am doing and feeling fine. My blood counts are a little below the normal range but my doctor does not seemed concerned.
Please keep us posted on how your Dad is doing.
Best regards.
Jonathan
