Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), also known as acute myeloid leukemia, is a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells. Patients with AML usually present with symptoms such as fatigue, bleeding, infection, prompting medical attention. An abnormal blood test reading will then result in further testing in a hospital with a hematologist to determine AML.

Hi.
Im new here and I love being here. I was diagnosed October 19, 2011, got in remission in November 2011, ended chemo+recovery in May 2012, and went back to job in june.
I wish I could share and find support.... feel only us understand what life is after cancer.
Im happy to be alive, in remission after one year and in good shape after all. I will never be gratefully enough for God's mercy in my life.
I dont want to start sharing my experience by the time being; only if someone needs it. I want to look ahead and enjoy life on daily-basis.
Last weefk I found out I have hipoglycemia, and the doctor thinks hiperinsulinemia too. I have to wait till january to see the specialist, but anyway, what seems to be my treatment now is just some diet and some exercise.
Does someone know if chemotherapy might develop diabetes? Or harm the liver so it cant do its job turning glucagon to glucose? Usual liver tests (TGO and TPG or so) are quite normal.
Some times is difficult for me to cope up with my daily routine. I work at a public office and though normal schedule is 8 hours, I usually have to stay longer due to my executive position. So... emotional support is also welcomed.

Donna and Taska, no problem, MRD is an important issue for all of us to know. Cliff could give us a more accurate answer. What I got in Spain was a whole bunch of tests. They take blood and bone marrow, and they studied chromosomas abnormalities, there are many thay I cant remember. They also checked something like "inmunofenotipe" or so, check for some proteins, and I think they also did a test than in spanish is called "citometria de flujo", that test was the one that indicated I had AML and not Non Hodgkin Lymphoma, which was the first pre-diagnosis I received. The try to find abnormalities in chromosomas in bone marrow, thats for sure. Dont understand about those protein tests. I understand FISH is important but Cliff has the last word :) Ah they also said that a 2% of blasts were found on my bone marrow, but they were tested too and they concluded that those ones were normal blasts. They explained that not all blasts are bad ones if under 5%. The doctors said in Spain that it was "highly improbable" that leukemia cells were in my body. But they cant predict nor say I wont have a relapse. They sad those same tests (or some of them ) should have been done with my sick bone marrow. Unfortunately, except for "citometria de flujo"; non of them are available in my country.
Both my doctors and the doctors in Spain say that my prognosis is good. Dont know what it means, and some times Im afraid to ask....

So, I want to repeat all those tests that had in Spain in October, maybe in five or six months, but have to find a place, and make a budget. Traveling and staying in Spain is quite expensive, though I pay nothing for tests. I have to make numbers.
