Acromegaly Support Group
Acromegaly (from Greek akros "high" and megas "large" - extremities enlargement) is a hormonal disorder that results when the pituitary gland produces excess growth hormone (hGH). Acromegaly most commonly affects middle-aged adults and can result in serious illness and premature death. Join the group to discuss symptoms, diagnosis, and treatments.
Evidently, we're all experiencing this disorder differently. I was diagnosed in '07; with many symptoms but no significant effects that prevented working. For a short while, I had great difficulty walking up a flight of steps. Now, I am somewhat taken aback by the realization that recovery from surgery may take as much as 6 weeks!
A very well respected, knowledgeable patient had to discontinue working - and various aspects of his life were seriously affected. Do what you're able and keep up on the literature- you must advocate for yourself.
Hope you have better days ahead.
Since then I've been basically retired and am now awaiting a final decision on my disability hearing as since then the condition has taken even more of a toll on my system...............chronic kidney disease, deformation of the femur ball in both hip joints forcing me now to get a hip replacement in the left hip and will eventually result in a replacement of the right as well. Have been diagnosed with "definitive cognitive and memory issues, that combined with the ongoing depression, make it highly unlikely that I would function to an acceptable level of contribution in a work environment"......at least that's what the Government's own doctors have concluded and reported to Social Security during their investigations.
Like you, some days I don't even feel like getting out of bed. Other days, I get up feeling okay and by lunch, am exhausted and hobbling around the house in pain.............even though all of my levels are within normal range and the IGF-1 levels are the best they've ever been since 2000.
I only lasted a few months at the new job and had to go on to a disability pension as I was not up to full time work. I did some part time work after that and still do and can still walk 5kms in about 33 minutes and I really feel for those on here who have not been as lucky because some days I do feel lousy and just want to sit and vegetate.
