It is ironic that you wrote about Acutane, as I was just reading "More Natural Cures Revealed" by David Trudeau. He mentioned how the antibiotic Acutane was proven safe and effective by the FDA, then in August 2005 it was taken off of the market due to causing hundreds of miscarriages and birth defects. He also said it was being prescribed for acne. I have never used it and try to stay away from Anti-biotics if I can.

Hi Sunny: I don't know if Acutane causes pituitary problems, but I had a friend whose daughter was on it years ago and she became very hostile and angry and had to be taken off of it. They have since moved out of the country, so I don't know how she is doing. It would be interesting to know if there is a connection. I am always wondering besides genetics, if certain drugs or things in our environment cause acromegaly. Take care, Mish

Hi.... I took Accutane twice... that would be interesting if it does have anything to do with these pituitary tumors.... I live in Canada and it is still being prescribed here for acne....

I just saw a commercial on TV yesterday "Accutane lawsuits - time is running out". I didn't get the phone number or website. If you google Accutane lawsuits you should get it. These lawyer will know about a possible connection of Accutane and pituitary issues.

I took Acutane about 10 years ago. I have heard about people inolved in the lawsuit for Acutane possibly causing IBS (and I now have IBS). What's really intersting, is that Sunny, you're not the only person I've run into w/in the forums that have mentioned a link between Acro/pit issues and Acutane. Glad you posted this here. I'd like to hear from more people!

Interesting. I too have taken acutane. However, I was only on it 2 years ago, and the docs think my tumor has been present for at least 5-10 years. But that would be an intersting thing to research.

Hi all... new to this forum but was doing a goolge search on accutane and decided i needed to chime in here.

I took accutane for about 6 months back when i was a senior in highschool. Aside from the EXTREMELY dry face, lips, etc. i had little other symptoms whilst taking the drug.

HOWEVER, I am now 27 and some days i wish i was dead. Beginning about a year after my treatment i started to develop unbearable fatigue but never knew why. Body aches, sever muscle pain, etc, etc...finally had ONE doctor that decided normal CBC blood testing wasnt enough, and he did a complete workup on me. EVERYTHING. Turns out my testosterone was at 160.. pretty much the equivelent of an old man...i was 25 at the time. Referred to an endocrinologist thereafter. He discovered my Pituitary gland was the problem. Bascially - the two hormoes (LH and FSH) responsible for telling my balls to produce more testosterone are broken. We tried to find a cause, but there was no tumor present and no chromosomal abnormalities. He left me with a diagnosis of IDEOPATHIC HYPOPITUITARISM. definition = i don't know why this is happening to you. I was put on testosterone replacement therapy with weekly injections.. but it did little to improve the way i felt. i was stronger yeah...but didnt really care about that...i want to FEEL BETTER!! I was almost out of hope, and have been trying to manipulate my diet to see if maybe a food intolerance is the problem. Seemed to be the only likely possibility of such a chronic condition. but now, after reading on the internet that some pople have have crazy LONG TERM side effects from accutane... i am now wondering if my senior year vanity is the reason for my crappy life right now.

hi mrriggs, thanks for joining and writing! i appreciated reading your story, very interesting. from some research, i am becoming more convinced that accutane has a negative effect on the pituitary, causing problems and tumors. i was thinking about making an effort to see about a class action suit regarding this, but the problem is i am quite ill right now, and don't have the ability to persue this. when i'm feeling better in the future, i may persue it. do you know anyone else who has taken accutane with pit. problems?

as you probably know, it took a long time for them to find out all the negative effects of accutane, example is the GI issues that are now infamous but that was not commonly known for many years.

yes, definitely look into the diet situation, a number of us on this group, incl. me are seeing that diet makes a big diff in our symptoms and how we feel. you can search for "diet" in the Discussions section, also look at my post responding to headaches, and posts by Berthe who has diet suggestions.

i'm sorry you have these difficulties, i wish you the very best, just know you are not alone! so many of us in this group are suffering major pituitary symptoms. keep a positive focus, gratitude for what you do have ... i try to do that. peace, sunny

Wow, i never would have thought to tie all of this to my accutane use only because it was so long ago, but the more research i do the more it seems like this is the reason for my suffering over the past decade. If it IS the reason...it's a little disconcerting...pretty much means there is no cure :(

I remember taking that drug many years ago, interesting.

I took roaccutane in 2006 for 4 months. Although it is not a pleasant experience it did help my acne a lot. But please don't blame the roaccutane when the other link may be the acne that everybody had before taking roaccutane - the hormones that gice you oily skin in the first place. So maybe your hormones were playing up and you were already on the way to pit problems before taking roaccutane.

Only appx 1 in 10,000 men have a prolactin tumor of significance but I believe the odds of a previous Accutane user to have a prolactin pituitary tumor is much, much more. I believe there might be a class action lawsuit worth investigating. You may have a tumor and not even know it. Has your sex drive decreased A LOT since Accutane treatment? Tumors/growths grow slow so it can take 2 yrs AWAY treatment to notice the change. All posts related to this topic would be great. This Rx is TOXIC to the body. I naively trusted my doctor and took this Rx.
