What a jerk!
I am ANGRY. My little niece-in-law has been working as a dental assistant for the same dentist since she graduated from dental school six years ago. In that time she was an hour late for work just one time when the power went out and she overslept. Otherwise she has been there on time every single day. She is allowed to take vacation days only when the dentist is on vacation. It is also mandatory that she participate in promotional activities outside of regular work hours. She lives 35 miles from work, so if there is any inkling of bad weather, she will spend the night in town. She recently learned of and is excited about her first pregnancy. Even though she suffers from morning sickness all day, she drags herself to work and works through it. Last weekend, one of her very dear friends who is also her cousin traveled across the state to participate in a wedding. There was an accident. He suffered a traumatic brain injury and was not expected to survive. She was unable to reach her employer, but left a message for him explaining the situation and asking for a personal day to travel there with her family to say goodbye. He called her back and told her that if she was not at work on time Monday morning, she would no longer have a job. Can you believe that!?! She is devastated, but what else could she do? She went with her family to say goodbye and they made it there just in time. Now she is beside herself with worry for the future and feelings of betrayal. I’ve been there and know how she feels. My nephew has a good job and, though things may be tight for a while, I’m sure they will manage. He, in fact, is so furious, he would not want her to work for that jerk any longer even if she hadn’t been fired. She is friendly and pretty and a very good worker, so I’m sure she will find another job in her field. However, I am hoping she will wait ‘til the baby is born and a few months old. These special days only come around once. She and my nephew are in the process of moving from a rather run-down trailer house to a family home on the farm, so she has plenty to keep her busy now. I just feel so bad that she has to experience such a bitter betrayal at her young age and pregnant to boot. My nephew is practically phobic about going in debt, so that is an additional stressor. She is coming over later today for help with her unemployment application. From what I know of her employer, I suspect he will fight her claim. I pray I will be able to provide some practical help as well as comfort and encouragement to her.

Wow, sometimes God does us a favor that doesn\'t look like a favor. Maybe it\'s time she gets free of this employer. Often we are willing to suffer a little longer, but God says, \"You know what? That\'s it.\" I do hope it works out in your niece\'s favor. Much love.
I strongly feel she is going to be just fine. What an ungrateful and insensitive man her boss is.Wonderful news on the pregnancy.Hugs xo
what a jerk- cant she report him? unfair labor practices or some such thing (Im not sure of your country laws- if she is working on the books she should be able to file some type of grievance against him- she has a documented medical emergency- unless he has a prior written warning signed by her- I believe she her rights are being violated- its worth looking into..
Thank you for your comments. I do believe that she will be much better off in the long run. We are checking with the States Attorney to see if she has any recourse.
good, its important that she not feel powerless, and that his behavior is documented for future employees- ppl think they can do whatever they want, because most ppl don\'t want to fight back- u never regret standing up for yourself, but u never forget when u don\'t.
