What a Difference a Year Makes

Looking back to early October last year, I was blissfully unaware of what was causing the pain and swelling that migrated around my body. It began the day we left on a 7 week overseas trip (anywhere in the Northern Hemisphere being a long, long way from home). The only thing we could put it down to was that I'd had one of the very first Swine Flu Inoculations five days before and maybe, it was a reaction to that. No way was I going to consider flying back home before our holiday had even started. It slowed me down a bit and there were some days I had to reneg, particularly on our Turkey tour but, all in all, I managed most things, including escaping from a hospital in Italy when I was put into an Isolation room (all the nurse heard was "Swine Flu") and not allowed out and no doctor had come after two hours. Another day, again in Italy, we walked 6km along a hairy mountain road in the rain as night was falling because a rock fall had completely blocked the road.
Just a month after arriving home, I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis and, as many of you know, a CT scan for this picked up a tumour on my right kidney which is still being checked every few months. So, 2010 hasn't been the year we were expecting it to be at all. We've spent more time in doctors' rooms than in the last ten years together. It's difficult to plan ahead because my RA is not under control yet, despite the toxic drugs I take.
However, I am blessed to have doctors who really care, the support of my family and friends and last, but certainly, not least my "DS Family." Finding people who are walking the same path with so much courage and strength has helped so much. I thank every one of you so much.
Let's all hope that 2011 will be a better year for everyone here.

Dearest Angel,
you have been thru a very tough year hon, and altho, i have always thought where you haveing the anoculation for the swine flu over sea\'s i always suspected the Ra as having to do with this as it came on like gang busters right after that.. All i do know as i am not a doctor is i always thought RA came on slowly to get it to the point you have it today.. I may be very wrong but it\'s just a thought i have had since you told me this story quite a while ago and always been very suspicious of this.. I wanted you to know this as i love you very much and i hate to see you suffer the way you do daily, maybe something to look into maybe not, but a thought i have had for a very long time..
Love you my good friend,
Becca

Hi Angel, 2010 will soon be behind us and we will start fresh on 2011. I too pray that we will all have a happier year. So many of our dear friends have lost loved ones this year and I hope that the new year will be better for you and for them. Love you and prayers for you, Wanda

Hello Angel!

Like Becca and Wanda, I pray that 2011 will be a much better year for all our DS Family.

I\'m so sorry that you are having such a difficult time with the RA. It runs in my family, and I\'ve seen so many suffer with it. One cousin now takes an IV Chemo drug once a month. That has helped her considerably. What are you taking?

I hope the spot on your kidney never develops into anything serious. You already have your plate full, Hon.

Take care of yourself, and know I\'m thinkingt of you.

Love, Ingrid

It\'s not nice having that kidney issue hanging around. Have you dipped into alternative therapies about that at all? Tumour-like issues do go away and it sounds like the medical already know this not malignant but one of those things that may grow and therefore be a nuisance. I didnt know about the 6km walk even though I am familiar with other aspects of your RA story! Cant imagine how you managed that prior to drug therapy! Hope you get more certainty on all health fronts for a Christmas gift from the universe.
