We're Younger Than we Used to Be
I saw an old movie the other day. There was this old woman in it who looked to be about 90, I'd say. But surprise, surprise. The character was said to be only 65. Another old movie showed a mother of a man about twenty years of age. She looked like she was hitting sixty, but surprise--the character was only in her forties. Nowadays, sixty-something looks like Tina Turner or Raquel Welch and Patty Duke is the rare actress who looks older than her years.
Which brings me to the point, we're getting younger these days.
And here's the proof: I turned 55 in December. I was all set for those senior discounts, the ones I used to see years back for those of my advanced years. But now, here it is over a month later and I can't find one. Why? You've got to be at least 62 for most and there's plenty where I need to be 65. So, guess I'm a senior in name only.
Back to the old movies--turns out back in the thirties and forties they typically cast much older actors/actresses for characters. Look in IMDB and you find they were ten to twenty years older than the characters they portrayed.

At Duncan Donuts I get a senior discount sometimes(I am 54 now), if I go inside, with my daughter who is 20, they give me a discount. Funny. I know what you mean, we finally get \"old\" enough?? now we cannot find a discount. Back in \"the day\" we probably would be insulted by a discount,
Wait a while longer and places will start gioving you discounts without even asking your age. That really makes you feel old. Diane
As long as I get discounts I don\'t mind them thinking I am old. You are only as old as you feel. Some days that\'s 80 others its 30.....lol
Age, as many things, is relative. What is \"old\"? When I was a child my parents were \"old\" to me. When I grew up a 60 y/o seemed \"old\" now I\'m over forty and \"old\" has been bumped up yet again!! LOL
My mother who was actually an \"older\" mother (over 40 when I was born) always seemed \"young\" and vibrant even in her 70s. It wasn\'t until her 80s that we thought she was getting \"old\" but when it happened it seemed to have happened over night. But that b/c we saw her through the eyes of love. To others she probably appeared \"old\" in her 70\'s.
She worked as the elementary lunch lady and I volunteered and taught creative writing when she was Mid 70s. She was still purposeful and loving and loved. To me that is what truly matters.
BTW she never asked for the senior discount. :-)
At Zellers, I qualify for the seniors discount in their restaurant as I am 55 years of age. I will be turning 56 next Wednesday. Join the club From Diane B.
lol....I\'ve been old my entire life....my mother would go for parent/teacher conference\'s and the teacher\'s would tell my mother I had nothing in common with the other kids, that I thought they were infantile, ( my parents were 39 and 40 when I was born) then I got married, my 1st husband was 5 years older, ssoooo if we went to a bar I was never asked for my ID and got served....2nd hubby was 9 years older than me and everyone thought I was older than him....yep, he looked young....hubby 3 was 14 years older than me, but to me he didn\'t look that much older, not until his cancer ravaged his body and it seemed he aged overnight....so with him, no one asked me how old I was, I got the discounts, soon I\'ll be 60 and it doesn\'t seem like I should be that old, older maybe...guess it depends on the day, some days the body feels 100 but most days I feel 16 but get tired of seeing that old lady looking back at me in the mirror....hugs, Sandi
