Wait mode.
Wow, what a strangely unusual day yesterday was. To start with, the snowstorm seemed much milder than predicted, making the driving much easier. We got to the doctor's office an hour early. The sweet receptionist said, "your appointment isn't today, its next week." If looks could kill, I can tell Leo would have slain me about then. The receptionist said "Where are you from?" when I had explained we had come 2.5 hours in a snowstorm, she had me sit in the reception area. "Even if Dr. Gawrie can't see you, one of the fellows should be able to do so." A short time after, she returned and said, "Dr. Gawrie will see you at 3p.m. I was so relieved, but my b.p was still high when the assistant took me back in the room.
Turns out Dr had an afternoon meeting, but it was cancelled (due to snow?) so he was available and had not went home yet when they called him. He spent an hour with me, was very thorough and made me feel very good. He even said he remembers me and mom!
So here is where we're at: I have hepatitis, not infection related, possibly autoimmune related but we will know more after the 11 tubes of blood are sorted out. I am not in liver failure. Cause of trouble: I do have a fatty liver, but shouldn't be causing so much grief. If nothing else turns up the biopsy will tell us if there is scar tissue. Agressive treatment for fats and such would be treatment, but he's not thinking it is this, just a possiblity.
Another possibility, especially d/t diarrhea and vomiting of late is sprue (another autoimmune) from intolerance to gluten. Left untreated, it can cause liver problems.
The one he is afraid we are dealing with is one of the autoimmune liver diseases which will mean aggressive steroid and immune suppressant therapy. I will not be able to say no to the prednisone as it will be a matter of life or death.
My job right now is to call one of the larger hospitals in the valley and see how many liver biopsies they do in a week. If it is more than a few, I can have the biopsy there and have them send the slides to him, otherwise if they do not do frequent biopsies, he wants me down there for the biopsy and he will have it scheduled within 2 weeks.
He will be calling me Monday or Tuesday with lab results.
I cannot tell you what a blessing he was. He kept saying he was impressed that I was so positive with all of the health issues I have faced and I told him God puts me where I need to be and I've learned to put my big girl undies on. Then when he examined me, he could see I was wearing a diaper because I was afraid of having the diarrhea on the trip. LOL
