Video Vault: VGM: "Keep Your Heart" From Turbo Outrun
I feel a need to bump yesterday's entry down a notch but don't have anything new to say, other than I'm trying to talk out why it makes me feel so bad with one of my friends privately here. So here's this instead:
Three years after Outrun was released, Sega released a sequel, Turbo Outrun, in 1989. I never got a chance to play it personally, but the consensus is that it wasn't as good as the original game. You couldn't pick your music, the paths didn't branch out (it was a cross-country US race), and you never had more than 60 seconds to finish a stage, even if you turned in a time so blazing from previous stages that you should have had more than that. The only real improvement was a turbo feature that gave your car a fast boost, but could only be used so much before it overheated, forcing you to wait before it could be activated again.
But compared to how it came out in the original game, Turbo Outrun's music was much better than the original, in part because sound boards for games had improved in kind by 1989. Here's the music from the second sector of that game, called "Keep Your Heart".
