Video Vault: The $25,000 Pyramid, 12/3/1985 (RIP Dick Clark)
If you didn't find out earlier, we lost a US television legend earlier when Dick Clark, largely credited with bringing rock and roll to the mainstream, died this morning after a massive heart attack. He was 82.
Clark is best known for his work on American Bandstand, which he hosted for 30 years on ABC and was a Saturday early afternoon staple when I was a kid. His company, Dick Clark Productions, was also responsible for bringing us hours upon countless hours of programming, including the Daytime Emmy Awards (of which Clark would win a few himself), the American Music Awards, and nearly countless varieties of game shows and other programming. He also hosted the Rockin' New Year's Eve festivities in Times Square for decades, even after his speech and walking abilities were impaired by a stroke in 2004.
He will be missed by many.
The best way to honor him by far would be to put up a full episode of American Bandstand, but I haven't been able to find one online yet. In lieu of this, then, is perhaps the second best show (not to degrade it because it was awesome in its own right) he is known for: the Pyramid series, which was on the airwaves on and off through much of the 1970s and 1980s, first on CBS ($10,000), later on ABC ($20,000), and then back to CBS and in syndication.
From December 3, 1985, here's a full episode of the daytime version of The $25,000 Pyramid. Celebrity guests are Martha Smith and Howard Morton.

I am sad, but he lived the hell out of life. It was time for rest. He is such a piece of music history...just to think of all the bands he met when they were just starting out...bands that went on to change the music world...it\'s staggering. And he kept it current, right up until the end. Amazing guy.
