Video Vault: "Rollergames", 1989 Episode
I really have little I want to add from the previous journal entry; it's basically the same old story. So I'll try to entertain you with this:
From the 1970s through the 1990s, programs featuring roller derby matches were on and off on the airwaves. The basic idea is that teams of five send out one designated skater wearing a different colored helmet from the rest of the team (called a jammer) in an effort to lap members of the opposing team to score points.
The 1989-1990 version of these roller derby contests, which could get dirty at times, was Rollergames, which aired opposite the first season of American Gladiators in most markets. Rollergames upped the ante by changing the familiar oval track to a figure eight layout with an inclining wall and a jump that jetters used at the start of the cycle to earn extra points. This resulted in much higher scoring games than regular roller derby. The series was crap for the most part -- in essence it was the showmanship of pro wrestling applied to roller blades -- and it was gone after one season.
Still, if you remember it -- and I actually thought this was good when I first saw it (I was only 11 years old; I didn't know any better) -- here's a match from late 1989 that comes down to the final cycle, as most games did on the show.
