update trip to Ontario
Here goes. I am in Ontario. I spent a week in my home town of Thunder Bay. I went to my friend's 50th wedding anniversary and I had a visit with my niece and sister. I think I have talked of my sister who has stroke related memory loss which is getting worse.
My sister designated my nephew who has psych problems and is very controlling and miserly, and her favourite daughter who is an alcoholic to be responsible for her health and her finances. We are all quite certain my nephew is draining her bank account. I stayed with the sober niece Karen who is very concerned about her mom. She takes her out several times a week.
A few years ago, we tried to convince Liz (my sister) that she might like to live in a seniors home. We took her to visit the last time I was there, and she liked it. However my nephew convinced her that she could not afford it. He has never forgiven me. So when I wanted to take Liz out for the day, he told Karen that under no circumstances were we to step foot in the driveway, let alone her house. He drove Liz to Karen's house - at least he let me see her. When he came to pick her up, he said to Karen "Well that is over with. She is going home now. Karen said "No. She is here for Diane and Art's anniversary and wants to see her again before she goes home". He got so angry that he almost slammed her hand in the van door. If a lady hadn't noticed and yelled, she might be missing fingers! As it was, I had to leave early and did not get to see her again.
Karen tried to involve the social worker and the police about the goings on. They were unable to do anything because Catherine and John both assured them that all was okay. Catherine complains about John but when anyone tries to help she denies any problems.
What a screwed up family.
That is half of my story tonight. I got a call from Cevyn on Monday - she was distraught. She has blown a lot of money and is feeling bad. I was not at all surprised and assured her that she did what most teenagers would do. I suggested that she probably now knows how fast it can go. I had talked to her Dad about going to the bank with her to put some of it aside. He didn't. She is very upset because her car broke down and her dad was giving her grief. She is living in the country with her dad and Beth. She can't afford a new car and her dad won't help. I asked her if she wanted us to come and visit. She said yes; we were here in Ottawa the next day. She was thrilled to see us. I think she just needed some extra lovin'. We have spent the last 3 days together. She has confirmed my suspicions that all is not really well with Beth and Harvey. Unfortunately, they don't include Cevyn in a lot of their discussions. She is feeling left out and I think perhaps unloved. She knows that we will always be here for her. She said that she thinks that Harvey is feeling guilty because he didn't counsel her. He was also worried that I was here to give him grief. Actually I think Beth is the instigator. I am not and I doubt that I will see either him or Beth during this trip. We wait in the car when we pick her up at home. Beth really doesn't like me. Oh well - for a peace loving person who wants to hurt nobody, I am not doing too well!
My only concern is Cevyn. As the post on FB said "what others think of you is none of your business". It works for me.
Joe is not feeling well and getting quite depressed. He has plantar fasciitis (very painful heel) and is having trouble walking and has stomach upset caused by his warfarin. We are feeling very old!
I have my ups and downs but mostly I am okay. On the upside, we are going to visit with Lisa's friend Nancy tomorrow. Joe is going to barbecue and Nancy and I are going to sit on her patio by the lake and drink wine!
Lisa: I think your peanut needs you. Make sure you give me a kick when she needs me. I miss you always and love you forever, Mummy

Oh my friend. Just because we seem to be functioning on next-to-empty, does not necessitate us being able to close up shop now does it?
Cevyn sounds like a very intelligent young lady who is pretty \"normal\". I hope she remembers this feeling as she moves forward. Haven\'t we all experienced the amazingly fast depletion of the bank account when we aren\'t really paying attention. She is incredibly lucky to have you, even if only from a distance but a very important sounding board.
I am really sorry about what your sister is dealing with (or not). I don\'t understand how people can be so screwed up at the expense of a weaker person in serious need of loving care.
Tell Joe I am thinking of him. Physical pain is so emotionally draining.
Lisa, Your Mom and Dad and peanut need your guidance. Hold them tight in your loving arms and let them know, over and over and over again that you are near. Thank you...
Love you lady, think of you often...
Merrilee
Of course, your Cevyn needs you, without a mother, in her teen years, a very great loss. She is outside of her father\'s relationship with a new wife. And feeling down about herself, losing self esteem, a car that won\'t work, losing freedom, it is tough. So glad you could be there for her.
Your sister is beyond your help. Do stay in touch with her sane dtr., the day will come when your sister will need your help...sooner rather than later. A controlling son, a drunk dtr., it sounds like a true soap opera. Be grateful that you\'re not usually involved. Plan your next trip, and maybe your grandaughter can go with you. She was a doll at the retreat. I loved meeting her and you!
For Joe\'s feet, (I\'ve had plantar fascitis sp? and wore some braces at night that I got from a catalogue, goodfeet? they were cheap and helped me totally. The pain is really awful. Needs very good supportive shoes, too, and special exercises....good luck, tell Joe I symphatize. Love, abby
what a trip!!!!!
What a blessing for Cevyn to have you in her life. I know you feel blessed by her. She knows she can always have you in her corner and in life that is truly a godsend.
So sorry about your sister. This life is so messed up for so many people. Wishing some peace!!!! Hugs, Kathy
You are a wonderful Grandmother. You are always there for Cevyn and willing to help in whatever way you can. It\'s good that Cevyn is old enough now that she can see you without going through Harvey or Beth. You are her silver lining in the storm. I know what it is like to worry about your grandchild and feel you have no power to do anything about the problem. It eats at you and your mind can\'t let it go.
I\'m so sorry your sister is in this predicament with her problem children taking advantage of her and draining her resources. Old age with all it\'s problems and the effects of her stroke is hard enough to deal with, adding a person taking advantage of the situation makes it intolerable. It\'s horrible that he is trying to keep you away from your sister.
Families and the dynamics within them can really be something. I\'m sorry that your sister is having to deal with this and your contact with her I know must mean so much.
Grateful your granddaughter knows you have her back and there is nothing worse than feeling edged out by step parents. It is not always the case, I know, yet often is and Cevyn does not need to feel that she has lost two parents! Sorry to say this, but Harvey sounds like a real weenie! A very controlling kind of man and this just does not work with teens as there must be give, take, negotiating and in the end being kind and loving is all that matters. Stay close to her as you are and I have no doubt that Joe and you are her anchor place.
Loving care and safe travels my friend and growing older certainly makes us humble and when we hurt it\'s just the pits. Hoping Joe can find some relief.
XO Joanie
Joanie has described Harvey well - a weenie! I think they still see Cevyn as a little kid. She is 19 and very responsible. They suggested having a relative stay with her when they are in Scotland next month! Cevyn said Beth is afraid I might mess the house up. Beth is OCD about keeping everything looking like it came out of Better Homes and Gardens. Cevyn laughed and said \"Dad and Beth doesn\'t know how lucky they are\". I know if she has her way, she won\'t be living at her parents\' place so it will be a non issue..
Thank you all for your support. I was really starting to feel like the witch from Hell!
Marlene dealing with grown up kids is a real bitch. Cevyn is a real gem, I wish her school was closer to you, she needs love and guidance not bull shit. I see with the twins their mom uses them as housekeepers, they would rather play but having some responsibility is good but not what they have. They will be 10 in Sept. Hubby thinks when they are teens they will run away and end up with us. I am betting he is correct. Trying to keep the peace is a full time job.
Good luck with your sister and her situation. I will pray for the best, for her.
Tight hugs
Penny
Families! Without them, we would not realize just how sane WE really are.
Oh boy - you have some stuff going on in the family! They are lucky to have you in their lives. Cevyn sounds wise beyond her years and I\'m sure knows who she can depend on the most in her life....and it\'s not Harvey or Beth! You are a rock to so many people, make sure you take care of you, too. Joanna x
No advise, sigh. We are feeling very old too. Sending love... for all the situations.
I am so glad that Cevyn has you in her life...you are the stability that she needs...and desires I am sure. Family dynamics...are sooo interesting to say the least...I am so sorry that your nephew is so...difficult. Hang in there and enjoy the rest of your trip...love and hugs...
