Uncomfortable

So, although my XMIL and I remain close, there is one thing I simply cannot do and that is to ever go into her apartment at the senior home where she lives. I did that once and knew I would never go back.  On her living room wall was a huge family picture which I believe was taken in 2009 when her son  married the OW. Even her 2 kids were in this picture. It was like a stab to my heart and I felt nothing but replaced. I had been in that "family picture" for 24 years. That was MY children in that picture, not hers and her children do not belong.
She asked me if I wanted to come in after we went out to dinner tonight and I quickly declined just stating I needed to get home. As much as she was my "other mother", she would never be able to understand my feelings in regard to that picture. She was married over 50 years to the same man, so I could never explain to her why I simply cannot put myself through that again.
I did notice though the one time I did go in her apartment that she has the old family picture we had taken 17 years ago in her bedroom. As much as my ex took from me, he didn't manage to keep his mother from still loving me like a daughter. But, I can also understand why some people just distance themselves completely from the entire ex family after a divorce. It probably would make some things easier.

Hugs! Flowers! Congratulations for knowing yourself, taking care of yourself, and being so kind to her, too. I hope you feel fine!

I love my MIL too, she\'s just like a mother to me. Although I know it hurt you to see the picture, you intellectually understand where she\'s coming from. I know that I will be hurt when I go to mine and see wedding pictures of the two of them, but it\'s all part of life and it\'s not going to stop me from going to see her - that\'s for sure. I am trying very hard to get to a point of I simply don\'t care anymore and he was just someone that I used to know.

TIME... your ahead of the game - you are already remarried!

Plus you have a MIL that loves you like her own daughter...

KRK, you are a better person than I am. I doubt I will get over that feeling of being replaced. It\'s been 9 years since me left me and he married her 4 months after the divorce was finalized.

I believe had he met a woman AFTER the divorce as I did dh, I wouldn\'t care as much. It\'s the long term affair that still makes me uncomfortable. I could have gotten over the fact he left me...yes we had issues, but it\'s the affair...the lies...things I never could have done to someone, he did to me and she did it with him. I don\'t know if I will ever get over that. Maybe 10 years from now? Lol

Thanks 2Getup. I do try to keep a healthy distance from past hurts so I can focus on the good things I have TODAY.
